With staying injury-free as priority No. 1, the Baylor football team went through its first spring scrimmage unscathed if not perfectly clean Thursday afternoon at the Allison Indoor Practice Facility.

Originally scheduled for McLane Stadium, the one-hour scrimmage had to be moved indoors because of temperatures dipping into the low 30s. This was the Bears' sixth workout in 10 days and their last before the university's Spring Break that runs through March 15.

"I like the fact that nobody got injured," eighth-year head coach Art Briles said. "That's the first thing we look at any time we scrimmage or practice. I think we're showing a little wear and tear. I didn't feel like we had the energy today that we're going to have to have, of course, to really be a top-notch football team. We'll attribute that, maybe, to the six workouts in that short a time span, but it's something we can't have. We've always got to be at our best every time we step on the field."

Quarterback Seth Russell, a rising junior, completed 16-of-25 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown and also scored on a 61-yard run as the offensive units racked up 531 yards on 97 plays.

"We've got to be more consistent from an offensive standpoint," Briles said. "We've got to have something we can certainly hang our hat on every snap. . . . Consistency would be the No. 1 thing. When the ball leaves his hand, we need to know where it's going. I'll look at tape, but I thought for the most part he did pretty well."

Russell, who hit Jay Lee on a quick slant for a 15-yard TD pass, said he was "pretty sloppy today."

"I'm just going to go in and watch film and try to get better from it," he said. "As a quarterback-receiver connection, we've got to click and we have to have those big plays. That's what our offense is made off of. And if we don't have them, we've got to kind of pick and choose what we do. But the defense is doing a phenomenal job, like we knew they would."

Somewhat out of character, the offense's biggest plays came on runs. In addition to Russell's 61-yard TD scamper, redshirt freshman Terence Williams broke off a 60-yard run to set up a one-yard TD; and sophomore Johnny Jefferson had a 38-yard tote as part of his 56 yards on just five carries.

With Russell and first-semester freshman Jarrett Stidham both being running threats at quarterback, "we're going to integrate it a little more, just to kind of open some things up," Russell said.

Running mostly with the No. 3 offense, Stidham was 9-of-15 for 98 yards passing and added 39 yards on 11 carries. Williams was the leading rusher in the scrimmage with 81 yards and one TD on 14 attempts, while Lee was the top receiver with four catches for 73 yards.

On the defensive side, redshirt freshman linemen Xavier Jones and Andrew Morris combined for four of the team's seven QB sacks. Linebacker Kendal Ehrlich and Taion Sells, who's subbing for injured safety Orion Stewart, led the way with eight tackles apiece.

Briles said the 11-day break - the Bears will return to the practice field on Monday, March 16 - comes at "certainly a good time for our guys."

"We kind of geared up to where we were pretty heavy going into it," he said, "because we know they're going to be taxed right before we get into spring back. And then we'll come back fresh, and we've got nine workouts after, and they'll all be great."

Baylor won't finish up until April 2, but the "Friday Night Lights" spring game experience is scheduled for Friday, March 20, at McLane Stadium.
