THE RUNDOWN
The second-ranked Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling (5-0) team upset top-ranked and defending national champion Oregon (3-1), 279.77-278.25, on Thursday night in Eugene, Oregon. The Bears dealt Oregon its first-ever loss in Matthew Knight Arena and snapped an 11-match losing streak to the Ducks.
The competition marked the return of Baylor head coach Felecia Mulkey to Oregon. Prior to accepting the head coaching job at Baylor, she led Oregon to four-consecutive NCATA National Championships and an overall record of 39-2 in NCATA.
After trailing Oregon by 2.5 points after the compulsory and acro events, the Bears dominated all three pyramid heats, posting perfect 10s in each heat. Going into the break at the half, Oregon led, 98.00-96.25.
After the half, Oregon earned a 28.65 to BU's 27.25 in the three toss heats. The Bears came roaring back in the tumbling event, led by Kiara Nowlin's 9.925 in the aerial pass, Lauren Sturm's 9.8 in open pass and Shayla Moore's 9.775 in 6-element pass.
Going into the final event of the meet, the 24-member team routine, Baylor trailed Oregon by 1.175 (181.875-180.70). The Bears out-scored Oregon 99.07-96.95 to claim the impressive victory.

"Although we made some significant mistakes early in the meet, the team remained poised and kept fighting. Kiara Nowlin and Lauren Strum each turned in solid performances in tumbling and our tumbling quad pass improved from the last meet and played a huge role in narrowing the gap," said head coach Felecia Mulkey.
