COMPLETE RESULTS | SATURDAY HEAT SHEETS | CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

THE RUNDOWN
AMES, Iowa -
Baylor track and field senior Rachel Johnson highlighted Friday's action at the Big 12 Indoor Championships at the Lied Recreation Center by winning the 5,000-meter event title.

Johnson cruised to a 10-second victory in 16:00.71 to become the first Baylor athlete to win the 5,000-meter race at the Big 12's indoor meet.

With the finals of only four events on the men's side completed and just five events on the women's side concluded, Baylor's men are eighth (five points) and the women are third (34 points). The women's point tally is seven more than the Lady Bears had going into last year's final day when they finished with a program-record 102 points and a second-place finish.

In the nine finals that were contested, Baylor had a total of 13 athletes score All-Big 12 honors on the opening day of the championships.

On the women's side, Baylor got a pair of runner-up finishes to go along with Johnson's crown. First, sophomore Annie Rhodes set a school-record and placed second in the pole vault by clearing 14-0.75 [4.29m]. It was Rhodes' second-straight All-Big 12 indoor honor and moved her into a tie for the 12th-best mark in the country. This season, Rhodes has broken her own school record in the event four times.

Then to close out the night, the women's distance medley relay team of Olicia Williams, Kiana Hawn, Jessica Purtell and Maggie Montoya came up just short to finish second in 11:24.32. It is the second-straight year, Baylor has finished as the runner-up in the event.

BU pentathlete, Jenna Pfeiffer, tallied a personal-best point total of 3,891 to take fourth to open Friday's action. Pfeiffer accomplished the personal-record point total by tallying personal-best marks in the 60 hurdles (9.12), high jump (5-8.75 [1.75m]), long jump (17-5.25 [5.31m]) and 800 meters (2:15.08). It is the second-straight year that the junior has nabbed All-Big 12 indoor honors, after taking seventh last year.

To earn three team points, junior Brianna Richardson recorded a personal-best in the long jump with a leap of 19-8.75 [6.01m] on her final attempt. It was her second All-Big 12 indoor honor.

Points for the men on the first day of action came from Felix Obi's seventh-place showing in the triple jump (23-11 [7.29m]). The junior earned his fifth All-Big 12 Indoor honor. He will have an opportunity to win his third straight Big 12 crown in his signature event of triple jump Saturday.

BU's men's DMR team of Jonathan Tijerina, Richard Gary, Josh Bethany and Derwin Graham secured All-Big 12 honors by finishing sixth in 9:59.55.

Outside the finals that were contested, the Bears had 13 student-athletes earn 15 entries into the finals of the Big 12 Indoor Championships that will be held Saturday.

In qualifying, the women had four times that ranked as the No. 1 qualifying time. In the 400-meter race, senior Raena Rhone produced a personal best of 52.72, which was also the second-fastest time in school history. Meanwhile in the 800-meters, Williams started off her day by qualifying in a top time of 2:10.43. Mariah Kelly had two No. 1 qualifying times as she first ran 4:46.52 in the mile and then followed that up with a 2:49.04 in her first 1,000-meter race of the year.

The Lady Bears had two qualifiers in the 800 as Putrell (2:13.24) joined Williams and in the mile as Montoya (2:52.79) joined Kelly.

Junior Taije Jordan produced a personal-best time in the 60-meter hurdles, 8.40, to earn the final qualifying spot.

Qualifying went well on the men's side too. In the 60, 200 and 60-meter hurdles, Baylor advanced two individuals in each event to the finals. Trayvon Bromell (1st, 6.57) and Malik Wilson (8th, 6.77) in the 60 meters, Kevin Harris (21.04) and Bromell (5th, 21.24) in the 200 and Bryce Grace (5th, 7.90) and Rhys Phillips (7th, 8.15) in the hurdles.

In the 400, George Caddick turned in a 46.66 to be the second-fastest qualifier. Meanwhile in the 800-meters, Brandon Moore was also the second-fastest qualifier with a time of 1:51.91.

TOP QUOTE #1
"Rachel looked so good today. We had a game plan to go with a mile left and she just took it and went. It was a very impressive win for her, because those Iowa State girls are really good. To win her first Big 12 indoor title is special." - head coach Todd Harbour on Rachel Johnson

TOP QUOTE #2
"We had so many personal-bests, which just shows how hard our athletes competed all day long in every event. I thought our athletes competed very, very well and put us in really good position going into tomorrow. I don't know if we could have squeezed much more out of today. There are always a couple little things, but we got a lot of people qualified." - Harbour overall on the day

TOP QUOTE #3
"Annie (Rhodes) had a great day. She got herself in position to be at the NCAA meet. I am very happy and proud for her. Jenna (Pfeiffer) had an inspiring performance to start the day. The way she closed out the 800-meters to jump up to fourth in the pentathlon was special. In the DMR, we knew Oklahoma State was going for it and trying to get an NCAA-qualifying time. Pulling Mariah off makes a difference for us, but our girls did a really great job. They fought hard. On the men's side, Trayvon (Bromell) had a great day. I thought Brandon Moore looked strong in the 800 and George (Caddick) looked great in the quarter. Felix (Obi) competed really hard in the long jump." - Harbour on individual performances that stood out

WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor will be back in action at the Big 12 Indoor Championships on Saturday. The field events start at noon and running finals begin at 1:30 p.m. Along with those athletes who qualified for finals on Friday, the high jump, triple jump and shot put will all be contested.
