Sept. 19, 2014 WACO, Texas - The Baylor cross country teams will compete for the final time in Texas in 2014 as both head south for the Texas A&M Invitational Saturday in College Station, Texas.
"We are excited about this weekend with both teams going down to A&M," head coach Todd Harbour said. "It will be are first real opportunity to see what both teams look like as we will have most people back racing."
The men will run a 6,000-meter race first at 8 a.m., followed by the women, who will race on a 4,000-meter course at 8:45 a.m.
The Baylor women are receiving votes in the national coaches' top 30 poll and are ranked No. 4 in the South Central region, while the men are 10th.
After holding some of its top runners out of last week's UTA Season Opener, the women's squad will be closer to full strength with only Rachel Johnson slated to miss action on Saturday. Despite a depleted roster, Baylor was second in its last time out and won the season-opening Bear Twilight Invitational.
Senior Bree Schrader and redshirt freshman Madie Zimmerman tallied scoring performances in both of BU's first two meets.
Meanwhile, the men have been led by reigning Big 12 Runner of the Week, Eric Anderson. The freshman has been the top runner for BU in the season's first two meets as the team has placed third at the Bear Twilight Invitational and second at the UTA Season Opener. Junior Kyle Scanlan and senior Jonathan Tijerina have also provided two scoring performances on the young season.
The meet is slated to include teams from Baylor, Central Arkansas, Houston, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, Texas State, Texas Tech, UT-Pan American.
Next weekend, the men's team will not compete, while the women travel to the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
