THE RUNDOWN
PROVO, Utah - Coming off a tough loss at Utah Valley on Friday night, Baylor soccer (3-1-0) answered with a strong effort in a 2-1 road win over No. 23 BYU (1-1-2) on Monday afternoon at South Field.
In a compelling matchup between two very evenly-matched teams, the Bears did not dominate possession like normal. But they did take advantage of the few scoring chances they had and the trademark Jobson defense stood its ground. Overall, BYU led in shots (14-5), shots on goal (8-5) and corner kicks (4-2) but BU led the most important category - goals.
Shots were few and far between in the first half (BYU led 5-2). However, the Bears shocked a crowd of over 4,500 in the 45th minute with 49 seconds left until half. Justine Hovden took a pass from Delanie Davis just outside the right corner of the box, cut in toward the center of the field and fired a laser right-footed shot to top left corner of the goal. BYU goalie Katherine Snyder barely had time to even move as the shot whizzed past.
BU carried the momentum out of the half and needed only 93 seconds to get back on the scoreboard in the second frame. After Ashley York corralled a goalie kick in the 46th minute, she lobbed a pass into Precious Akanyirige's direction. Following a bounce off a BYU defender, Akanyirige took control of the ball, powered by the defender and booted a left-footed shot to the top left of the goal in a one-on-one situation with BYU goalie Hannah Clark, who started the second half.
From there, Baylor withstood several good scoring chances by BYU until a hand ball in the box gave the Cougars a penalty kick in the 89th minute. Elisabeth Phillips kicked right, BU goalie Michelle Kloss guessed left and the lead was cut in half with just 75 seconds left. However, the Bears easily ran out the clock with a few nice defensive plays to secure the win.

*Baylor earned its first road win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 19 Texas A&M on Oct. 9, 1998 - a span of 22 games.
*Baylor notched its first win over a ranked opponent since topping No. 14 Georgetown on Nov. 16, 2012, to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.
*Baylor ended BYU's seven-match unbeaten streak at home.
*Baylor knotted the series with BYU at 1-1 after dropping the first-ever meeting last season on Oct. 4, 2013, in Waco, Texas, 2-1.
*Baylor is now 14-0-0 when scoring first since 2013.
*Michelle Kloss earned her 32nd career win, moving her within 17 of tying Dawn Greathouse (1997-00) for first all-time at Baylor.
*Justine Hovden scored her second goal of the season and sixth of her career.
*Delanie Davis recorded her first career assist in her fourth collegiate game.
*Precious Akanyirige scored her first collegiate goal in her fourth career game, marking her first game-winner.
