WACO, Texas - Baylor's 11th practice of spring drills included its third of four scheduled scrimmages. The defending Big 12 champion Bears opened Saturday at the Highers Complex practice fields with position and seven-on-seven drills, before concluding the day with a 55-minute scrimmage.

"Our main objective today was to come out and make sure our guys stayed healthy," Briles said. "This was more of a practice-like situation (than a scrimmage), so it was just another day to play and improve."

The highlight of the day came as Bryce Petty connected with Corey Coleman for a 52-yard touchdown down the sideline. Petty finished 10-for-14 for 150 yards as the high-powered BU offense racked up 250 yards through the air on 29 pass attempts. Coleman had the top day among receivers, hauling in four catches for 76 yards, and Antwan Goodley added two catches for 52 yards.

"This spring has been real productive, we're kinda light in the o-line so it's hard to really simulate a lot of things we want to do in practice - because of our numbers - but that's just the way it is," Briles said. "We're not the only team in America with that issue, and we'll get through it as best as possible."

Despite the limitations on the line, Baylor's ground game managed good yardage as Devin Chafin led the way with three carries for 53 yards, including a 51-yard TD scamper. Johnny Jefferson had seven carries for 36 yards, while Shock Linwood tallied 27 yards on six carries.

The defense was led by Taylor Young, who racked up five tackles, including two sacks. Collin Brence, Aiavion Edwards and Terrence Singleton each had three tackles on the day. Meanwhile, Andrew Billings had two sacks.

"But it's been a good spring up to this point, we've been through 11 practices, our guys feel comfortable and I think the defense is really coming on," Briles said. "We've got a bunch of guys over there that haven't played a lot and now they're getting a good chance to get a lot of experience so I'm excited about their direction on that side of the ball, no question."

BU will now have three practices next week in preparation for Saturday's annual Spring Scrimmage presented by Time Warner Cable, which will wrap up the 15-date spring drill schedule.

"This is a full-blown process, it's not just about being on the practice field it's about eating right, sleeping right, getting in the weight room and taking care of business and taking care of academics, so they're doing a good job of taking care of themselves on and off the football field," Briles said.

The Bears will then reconvene as a team in early August as they prepare for the 2014 season opener and debut of the new McLane Stadium with an Aug. 31 matchup against SMU.
