THE RUNDOWN
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -
In their final action before the Big 12 Championships, Baylor track and field athletes broke three school records on Saturday.

Felix Obi bettered his own school-record mark in the triple jump on his final attempt at the Tyson Invitational. The sophomore unleashed a jump of 53-11.25 [16.44m] to place second in the competition. Obi bested his previous record of 53-2.75 [16.22m] by 8-5 [.22m], which he set at the Rod McCravy Memorial three weeks ago. His jump on Saturday is currently the best in the nation for a Division I athlete.

Meanwhile at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., Baylor's two distance runners, Rachel Johnson and Mariah Kelly, both set school records.

In the 3,000 meters, Johnson (9:08.36) took down the 23-year old school record of Natalie Nalepa (9:13.66). The junior finished sixth, bettering her own personal best by over 14 seconds (9:22.58).

In the mile event, Kelly placed 13th in a time of 4:41.38, which was .29 seconds faster than the 2008 school-record time of Lauren Hagans (4:41.67). The junior improved her own personal-best time by over five seconds (4:46.62).

Obi was not the only Bear to shine on Baylor's final day at Tyson Invitational in the Randal Tyson Track Center.

Freshman Trayvon Bromell established a new PR in the 200 meters with a time of 21.02 to take third. Teammate Blake Heriot was close behind in 21.08 for fourth.

At the 3,000-meter distance, BU athletes racked up two personal-record times. Peyton Thomas (9:58.08) was ninth in the college division, while Alex Davis was fourth in the championship race in 9:44.22. On the men's side, Brad Miles carded a top-five finish in 8:34.57 to be fifth.

BU's high jumpers opened the day strong as Lauren Cook (5-9.75 [1.77m]) and Kaylyn Schultz (5-5.75 [1.67m]) both tallied personal-best marks, while finishing second and fourth, respectively. Cook's mark currently ranks fourth in the Big 12 and was second all-time in BU history.

In the 4x400-meter relay, Baylor's women (Alyssa Nichols, Raena Rhone, Olicia Williams, Michelle Nwachukwu) had a season-best time of 3:37.53 to be eighth at the meet.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Baylor athletes set a total of 10 personal bests on the day.
