No. 11/11 Baylor Hosts UT-Pan American...
The 11th-ranked Baylor Lady Bears will host the UT-Pan American Broncs on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m.
Baylor is 4-1 on the season after posting three victories to claim the Baylor-hosted Basketball Travelers Classic championship. The Lady Bears defeated Utah State (99-43), Stetson (96-42) and Marist (90-60) to earn the tournament title.
The UT-Pan American Broncs are coached by former Baylor assistant coach Larry?Tidwell (1992-98). He is in his second year with the Broncs after coaching six seasons at Lamar. The Broncs are 6-3 on the season and all three losses have come on the road vs. ranked opponents; then-18th-ranked DePaul (93-70), then-seventh-ranked Texas A&M (63-61) and then-sixth-ranked Texas (72-45).
Balanced Attack...
The Lady Bears are experiencing balanced scoring so far this season. Eight of the team's 11 players who have scored this season are averaging 8.2 or more points a game including four Lady Bears who are scoring 12.2 or more a contest. Sophomore post Khadijiah Cave leads the way with 16.6 ppg, sophomore forward Nina Davis follows with 16.4 ppg, freshman forward Dekeiya Cohen manages 13.5 ppg and sophomore guard Imani Wright scores 12.6 a contest.
Four players are excelling on the boards this season. Davis leads the team with 8.4 rebounds a contest while Cave follows with 7.4 rpg, junior post Kristina Higgins manages 6.8 rpg and Cohen hauls down 6.0 rpg.
Five BU players are averaging 2.5 assists per game or higher. Junior guard Niya Johnson dished out 6.0 apg, sophomore guard Ieshia Small follows with 5.3 apg, Wright doles out 2.8 apg, Davis averages 2.6 apg and freshman guard Kristy Wallace manages 2.5 apg.
Cohen Named Big 12 Freshman of the Week...
Freshman forward Dekeiya Cohen was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Freshman of the week for the first time in her career. Cohen came off the bench in all three games of the Baylor-hosted Basketball Travelers Classic and averaged a team-leading 16 points and .732 field goal percentage (14-of-22). She also contributed 6.3 rebounds a game while adding six assists, four steals and three blocks. Cohen tallied 12 points against Utah State, a team-leading 18 vs. previously unbeaten Stetson and 18 against Marist in the finale. On the season, Cohen is averaging 13.5 points an outing while hauling down 6.0 rebounds and shooting .645 from the floor.
Cohen is the first Lady Bear to earn a Big 12 weekly honor this season.
Sophomores Leading the Team...
• A trio of sophomores, Khadijiah Cave, Nina Davis and Imani Wright, are averaging double-digit scoring on the season.
• Cave, a 6-2 post, is averaging a team-leading16.6 points and 7.4 rebounds. Cohen cracked the starting lineup for the first time in her career and earned Basketball Travelers Classic MVP honors en route to leading Baylor to the tournament championship with a 3-0 mark. Over the three games, Cave averaged 15.7 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting 70.8 (17-24) percent from the floor and 86.7 (13-15) percent from the free throw line.
• Cave leads the team in field goal percentage at 66.7 percent (32-48).
• Davis, a 5-11 forward, is averaging 16.4 points and a team-leading 8.4 rebounds an outing.
• Wright, a 5-9 guard, is scoring 13.5 points a contest, tallying double digits in all five games this season, a career-high 18 points vs. Oral Roberts.
Cohen Coming on Strong...
• Freshman Dekeiya Cohen led the team in scoring with a career-high 18 points vs. Stetson.
• Cohen has produced back-to-back-to-back double figure scoring efforts; 18 vs. both Marist and Stetson and 12 vs. Utah State.
• Cohen ranks second on the team in field goal percentage at 64.5 percent (20-31).
Scouting UT-Pan Am...
• Located in Edinburg, Texas, the UT-Pan American Broncs bring a 6-3 record into Wednesday's contest. The Broncs, members of the Western Athletic Conference, have lost to then-18th-ranked DePaul (93-70), then-seventh-ranked Texas A&M (63-61) and then-sixth-ranked Texas (72-45) while posting victories over New Mexico (61-59), Texas A&M-Kingsville (86-36), Concordia (72-31), Eastern Michigan (81-75), Houston Baptist (75-72) and Texas Lutheran (71-47).
• The Broncs are led by Shawnte' Goff, a 5-8 sophomore guard, who averages 18.0 points per game. The squad's top rebounder is Rickell Preston, a 5-10 junior guard, with 5.4 rebounds an outing.
• UT-Pan American is coached by eighth-year head coach Larry Tidwell (Austin College, 1976). Tidwell owns a 148-85 (.635) career mark and is 20-19 in two seasons along the UT-Pan Am sideline. He went to UTPA from Lamar where he coached for six seasons. Tidwell is a former Baylor assistant coach (1992-98).
