Oct. 14, 2014 WACO, Texas - Baylor women's cross country runner Peyton Thomas received the first Big 12 Runner of the Week honor of her career, the league's office announced on Tuesday.

The Roswell, Ga., product tallied BU's third conference honor of the season by winning the HBU Invitational on Friday in Houston. Thomas completed the 5,000-meter course in 19:21.0. She finished 47 seconds ahead of the second-place runner.

Thomas become Baylor's first individual meet winner since Rachel Johnson won the Iowa Black & Gold Invite on Sept. 13, 2013.

The individual finish propelled the BU women to the team title with a total team score of 29 points, which was nine points ahead of second place Texas A&M.

The meet win was BU's first since taking first at the season-opening Bear Twilight Invitational on Aug. 29.

In the 18-year history of the Big 12, BU female runners have been honored 21 times. Baylor's other conference winners this year were Johnson, won the women's runner of the week honor on Sept. 30, and freshman Eric Anderson, who was named the men's winner on Sept. 16.

Baylor runners will be back in action this Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
