IRVING, Texas - Baylor men's basketball junior Pierre Jackson was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week for games of Feb. 27-March 3 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. Jackson earned top rookie recognition for the third time this season.
The 2011-12 campaign marks the third consecutive season that a Baylor player picked up three Big 12 Rookie of the Week accolades (Ekpe Udoh, 2009-10; Perry Jones III, 2010-11). In all, Baylor earned four Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors, the most in program history in the Big 12 era; the four conference rookie awards are the most since the 1993-94 season when Baylor had six Southwest Conference Newcomer of the Week award-winners.
Jackson, one of 11 finalists for the 2012 Bob Cousy Award, averaged 21.5 points as the Bears split two games, defeating Texas Tech 77-48 before dropping their season finale 80-72 at Iowa State. He scored eight points with four assists in the Feb. 27 win over the Red Raiders, before contributing a career-best 35 points in a March 3 loss at Iowa State. He was 11-of-19 from the field, including five 3-pointers, at Iowa State.
Jackson's 35 points are the most scored by a Baylor player since LaceDarius Dunn's 43 points Jan. 4, 2011, against Morgan State and the most in a Big 12 game since Dunn's 38 at Texas Tech in 2008.
The Las Vegas native has been a part of eight go-ahead, game-tying or game-winning plays this season. Jackson leads Baylor with a team-best 13.5 points and 5.6 assists, while shooting 47.9 percent from the floor, 45.3 percent from 3-point range and 82.9 percent from the free throw line.
Baylor (25-6, 12-6) will face Kansas State in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship in Kansas City, Mo. The matchup between the 4 and 5 seeds will tip at 11:30 a.m. CST Thu., March 8, on ESPN2.
