FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - On the first day of Baylor's last-chance qualifying meets, senior Jessica Ubanyionwu made the biggest improvement with a significant triple jump season best at the Arkansas Final Qualifier in Fayetteville, Ark.
One of three Baylor student-athletes competing at the meet, Ubanyionwu entered the meet ranked 24th in the NCAA with her leap of 42-0.5, and improved by more than a foot. Her meet-winning mark of 43-2.25 moved her up to fifth in the nation and puts her in good position to earn an NCAA berth as qualifying meets around the country finish on Saturday.
Along with Ubanyionwu in Arkansas, men's sprinters Everett Walker and Woodrow Randall each entered the 60 and 200 meters, but were unsuccessful in improving marks. Walker finished sixth in the 60 meters at 6.75 and ninth in the 200 meters at 21.31. Randall was one spot back in the 60-meter finals at 6.80 and two spots back in the 200 at 21.97.
Baylor distance medley relay also kicked off the action as the team's only competitors on the first day of the two-day Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame. The group of Cate Westenhover, Diamond Richardson, Brittany OgunMokun and Rachel Johnson was unable to improve their season best, placing fourth at the meet with a time of 11:28.42.
Baylor track and field members will continue action at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame on Saturday, as well as the men's 4x400-meter relay team taking on competition in the Iowa State Qualifier in Ames, Iowa.
