WACO, Texas - In its dual match season opener at the Hurd Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, the fifth-ranked Baylor men's tennis team defeated Louisiana, 7-0. The Bears swept singles and won two of three doubles matches to blank the Ragin' Cajuns.
"To be honest, this first match was a little better than I expected. I thought that our general enthusiasm level and toughness was pretty good. I was pretty pleased, don't know that we played great tennis all over the place and certainly we had a disappointing result at No. 1 doubles but you looked up and down the courts and everyone fought hard and did a good job," said head coach Matt Knoll.
Baylor's first five finishers in singles swept matches in two sets. Robert Verzaal was the first off the court for the Bears, claiming a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. Mate Zsiga, ranked No. 20, earned BU's second singles point playing at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1. He was followed in order by Lars Behlen (6-1, 6-3), Roberto Maytin (6-3, 6-2), Kike Grangeiro (6-3, 6-3) and Marko Krickovic. Krickovic's match went three sets, he dropped the first set, won the second then won the super tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
Baylor got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the point. Krickovic and Verzaal teamed to win on court two while Grangeiro and Zsiga won at No. 3.
The Bears will host No. 8 Florida on Sunday at 12 p.m.
