MT Sweeps Singles and Doubles Crowns

WACO, Texas - It was a clean sweep for Baylor men's tennis as they earned the singles and doubles titles in the 11th-annual Baylor-HEB Invitational at the Hurd Tennis Center. Junior Roberto Maytin and freshman Marko Krickovic claimed the doubles crown and freshman Mate Zsiga won the singles championship. It marked the fourth time that Baylor players have claimed both the singles and doubles titles.

With their win, Maytin and Krickovic became the sixth Baylor doubles team to earn the tournament's championship with an 8-4 win over Iowa's Marc Bruche and Will Vasos. The Baylor tandem was the tournament's top-ranked team while the Hawkeye duo was second-seeded. In addition, Maytin became the first Baylor player to win the doubles championship twice, he and John Peers claimed the 2010 crown.

Singles semifinal action saw two Baylor players competing against two Oklahoma players. Zsiga produced an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over Dane Webb but it took Maytin three sets to get past Guillermo Alcorta. Maytin took the first set 6-3 but fell 2-6 in the second before posting a 6-1 third-set win to claim victory.

In the singles championship match, which was played two hours after the completion of the doubles title match, Maytin won the first game, holding serve, but it would be all Zsiga the rest of the set as he claimed six straight games, winning 6-1. Maytin began the second set by breaking Zsiga's serve then held his serve to take a 2-0 lead. Zsiga would fight back and the set was eventually tied at 5-5 but Maytin won the last two games to take the second set 7-5. In the third and deciding set, Maytin was only able to hold serve in the second game enabling Zsiga to win the third set 6-1 and earn the title.

"It was an unbelievable day for us, that's the second time in history that we've had both guys in the finals and we won the doubles as well. It was big deal that they were able to make it through the draw and keep a Baylor guy's name on the trophy," said head coach Matt Knoll. " It was a big deal for Mate to win in his first college tournament and it was great for Bobby (Maytin) to come back and win doubles again. Winning with two different partners says a lot for what he's doing in doubles. It's definitely a wonderful start to the season."
