With the win, Baylor improves to 20-4 overall and 16-3 at the Baylor Tennis Center this season. The Bears have now won 10 straight versus the Islanders to take a 10-6 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.

"It feels great to advance," head coach Matt Knoll said. "Tomorrow we get to play in the round of 32 and we are going to be excited to play another match. It was a great day for us. Texas A&M Corpus Christi came in with a lot of confidence and really fought us and I think that will help us tomorrow."

Baylor will now face Texas Tech in the second round of NCAA Championship play at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center. The 22nd-ranked Red Raiders beat No. 43 Rice, 4-3, on Friday. Baylor beat Texas Tech on the road on March 27, 4-3. The Bears have never lost in the second-round of NCAA play with an 11-0 record in the round.

"We have a lot of work to do tomorrow," Knoll said. "We are going to have to certainly play better than we did today, but we will."

After a doubles point loss in its last match out, Baylor responded by capturing the first point of today's contest with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.

Fifth-ranked Roberto Maytin and John Peers opened the match with an 8-4 win over Laurent Montoisy and Gergo Weidinger at the top of the lineup. The win was the eighth straight for the BU duo, who is now 18-2 in dual-match play.

Before the match, Knoll removed senior Sergio Ramirez from both his singles and doubles lineups. The change bumped freshman Robert Verzaal into the doubles lineup with senior Jordan Rux at the No. 3 spot.

The first-time partners bonded quickly to dispatch of Andrew Maingot and Matt Westmoreland, 8-3. The match was tied at two games apiece, before Rux and Verzaal won six of the next seven games to clinch the match for BU.

"Verzaal was great today," Knoll said. "It was great for him to get out and get a chance to play in the NCAAs. He has practiced extremely well the last couple of weeks. The future is bright for him."

BU's No. 2 duo of Julian Bley and Kike Grangeiro was leading 7-5 in its match when BU claimed the point.

In singles, Grangeiro pushed the Bears to a 2-0 lead as he downed Westmoreland 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. The 97th-ranked BU sophomore is has won four straight to up his dual-match record to 18-4.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi got its only point of the day as Weidinger got past the 98th-ranked Dennis Lengsfeld, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 5 position.

The Bears would then respond by claiming the next two matches off. First, Jordan Rux won his seventh consecutive match with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against James Langford at the No. 2 spot.

To clinch the match, Bley returned to the singles lineup for the first time since April 9 and earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nathan Robinson at the No. 6 spot. Bley is now 9-5 in dual-match play.

"Julian is not your typical No. 7 guy," Knoll said. "He is a seasoned guy that we have a ton of confidence in. We know he can go out and perform like he did today."

When Baylor got the necessary fourth point to claim the victory, the matches of John Peers and Roberto Maytin were still in progress.
