LINCOLN, Neb. - After not shutting out any conference opponents last season, the 11th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team recorded one in its second match of Big 12 play this season with a 7-0 win at No. 39 Nebraska on Saturday at the Vine Street Courts.
"I was really pleased," head coach Matt Knoll said. "We knew their program was playing well and their guys were tough. The doubles were all close and in the singles matches we really had to battle the whole way, but our guys just did a super job."
Baylor (13-3, 2-0) won the doubles point for a 14th consecutive match and then claimed victories at all six singles positions to get its first conference regular season shutout since April 25, 2009 versus Oklahoma State. Nebraska (14-7, 0-1) dropped only their second match at home this season and will now finish winless against Baylor in Big 12 regular season play as the Cornhuskers make the move to the Big Ten next season.
Overall, Baylor is 22-3 against Nebraska, but in the Big 12 era the Bears hold a 22-0 record against the Cornhuskers.
In posting the doubles point win, the Bears took all three matches for the ninth time this season. First, the seventh-ranked pair of Roberto Maytin and John Peers captured their 10th win over a ranked opponent by downing 41st-ranked Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim, 8-6. The BU duo is now 12-2 in dual-match play and 25-5 overall.
Next, Julian Bley and Kike Grangeiro got past Calin Paar and Robert Schulze, 8-6, at the No. 3 doubles position to clinch the point for the Bears. The tandem of Baylor juniors is now 14-1 in dual-match play with five straight wins.
To close out doubles, No. 83 Sergio Ramirez and Jordan Rux beat Andre Stenger and Sebastian Florczyk, 8-6 at the No. 2 spot. The pair is now 10-2 on the dual-match season.
"We were battling on all of those courts and we did a good job to get all three of them," Knoll said. "It was a good effort from the guys."
In singles play, Baylor used wins from the bottom half of its lineup to secure the victory. To open, the 83rd-ranked Maytin rebounded from an opening set loss to post a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Stenger at the No. 4 position. The BU sophomore has now won 11 of his last 12 in recording a 12-2 dual-match record.
"Roberto did a super job of righting the ship and turning the tide emotionally," Knoll said. "That was a great job of showing a lot of heart and battling back."
The 88th-ranked Grangeiro propelled the Bears to a 3-0 lead as he blew past Tom Blackwell at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Grangeiro raised his record to 13-2 with the 10th win in his last 11 matches.
To clinch the match, freshman Dennis Lengsfeld in his first Big 12 action dropped Florczyk 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot. It was also the first match ever for the 81st-ranked Lengsfeld (7-4) at the bottom of the lineup.
"Those guys at the bottom of the lineup did a super job," Knoll said. "They really led us today. They were really in command the whole time. Those guys were the most consistent with their focus over the course of the match and were able to get off quickly, which helped us a ton."
With the match in hand, Rux got his first win since March 10 with a 7-6(5), 6-3 at No. 3 singles over Lindheim, the 18th-ranked Peers ran his dual match record to 13-3 with a 6-2, 6-7(5), 1-0(4) win over the 69th-ranked Aumueller at the top of the lineup and Ramirez held on to defeat Paar at the No. 2 position 6-1, 0-6, 7-6(4).
"We won some tough matches down the stretch," Knoll said. "We did a better job of finishing than we did in the last match we played, so I am really proud of those guys for getting across the finish line there."
Baylor will be back in action on Wednesday as the Bears travel to No. 7 Texas for their final road contest of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will conclude the first half of BU's conference slate.
