WACO, Texas - The Baylor equestrian team continued action today in day two of the Varsity Equestrian National Championships at the Extraco Events Center in Waco. The third-seeded Hunter Seat team opened with a 6-2 victory over South Carolina followed by a 5-3 loss to Georgia. The No. 8 seeded Western team was defeated by South Carolina, 5-3, and were knocked out of the competition.
The Hunter Seat team opened with a dominating performance against South Carolina. They began the day's competition with a 4-0 sweep in equitation on the flat. Kendra Vicary led off with a 149-146 victory. She was followed by Taylor Brown (157-153), Kim Woodsum (139-119) and Lisa Goldman (146-113) who all earned points for Baylor.
Baylor followed with a 2-2 tie in equitation over fences. Goldman earned a team high of 168. Brown edged South Carolina's Morgan Hale 155-154 and added the second point for the Bears. This resulted in a 6-2 victory for Hunter Seat.
The Hunter Seat team continued competition in the second round with a 5-3 loss to second-seeded Georgia. Baylor began the contest with a 2-2 split in equitation on the flat. Brown (145-132) and Goldman (160-0) each recorded points for the Bears.
Baylor struggled in equitation over fences, suffering a 3-1 loss. Goldman's score of 163 was enough to earn the lone point for the Bears and resulted in a 5-3 overall loss.
"The girls rode well tonight," head coach Ellen White said. "We made two mistakes and unfortunately we made them at the same time."
The Western team suffered a 5-3 loss to South Carolina. The Gamecocks started strong, defeating Baylor 3-1 in horsemanship. Olivia Rogers (144-141) scored the Bears' only point.
Baylor competed neck and neck against fifth-ranked South Carolina in the Reining competition with a 2-2 tie. Bryn Lindley (153.5-148.5) and Meghan Murphy (144.5-141.5) each earned points for Baylor, but was not enough to overcome South Carolina.
Baylor's Hunter Seat team will compete against No. 4 seeded Oklahoma State for third place beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Admission to the VENC at the Extraco Events Center is free and open to the public.
