WACO, Texas - The ninth-ranked Baylor men's tennis team claimed its 11th straight win against TCU with a 6-1 victory over the 52nd-ranked Horned Frogs on Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Tennis Center.
"I wanted the guys to come out and be more disciplined and compete more consistently and I thought we did that," head coach Matt Knoll said. "The thing today was that I felt our poise was excellent. I didn't see guys getting off track."
Baylor (3-2) used wins at all three doubles matches to earn that point and then won five singles matches in straight sets to record the bounce back victory over TCU (2-3). The win comes just six days after the Bears were beaten by No. 6 UCLA in Waco, but for the second time this season Baylor got a win following a loss to a top 10 opponent. However, it marks the first time this season that the Bears have topped a ranked opponent.
The most consistent doubles team for Baylor on the year once again showed up big for the Bears as Julian Bley and Kike Grangeiro at the No. 3 spot got BU its first match win of the day with an 8-5 victory over Zach Nichols and Daniel Sanchez. The Baylor pair is now 5-0 on the season.
BU's fourth-ranked duo of Roberto Maytin and John Peers got their first win of the season over a ranked foe to claim the doubles point for the Bears as they defeated No. 55 Emanuel Brighiu and Christopher Price, 8-4. It is the third win in a row for Maytin and Peers and the win ups their record to 4-1.
The No. 2 tandem for Baylor of Sergio Ramirez and Jordan Rux had to prevail in a tiebreaker to post a 9-8(3) win over Soren Goritzka and Cameron Nash. The BU duo is now 3-1 on the season.
"The doubles matches were all close," Knoll said. "We didn't really take control of doubles until pretty late with a tiebreaker at No. 2 and one break at No. 3. It was push and pull the whole match, but I thought we did a super job to sustain some momentum and stay focused to get through those matches."
Following the UCLA loss, Knoll made several changes to his singles lineup as he inserted freshman Dennis Lengsfeld into the No. 2 singles spot, which dropped Rux to the No. 3 position. The 15-year head coach also flipped his No. 3 and No. 4 players from the UCLA match as Ramirez moved ahead of Maytin, while Bley again played the No. 6 spot.
The moves paid off as Ramirez rebounded from his loss in the UCLA match to blow past Nichols 6-1, 6-1 in under an hour at the No. 4 spot. The senior Rux followed with a 6-2, 6-2 thrashing of Slah Mbarek to get Baylor within a point of claiming the match. Ramirez improves to 3-2 on the season, while Rux is now 2-3.
"I think the other thing that was impressive was that Sergio was last match on last match and today he is first match off," Knoll said. "He wins 6-1, 6-1 and is the first guy to finish, so I thought that was a really impressive turnaround by him."
Lengsfeld in only his second match of the year for the Bears came up with the match clinching win as he dispatched of Goritzka, 6-2, 6-0, to remain undefeated in dual match play.
"Dennis lost two games at No. 2," Knoll said. "That is hard to beat. He is one of our best players. We just need to get our better players up there in the lineup. He is excited for the opportunity and today he of course came through."
With the match decided Maytin handled Price 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 position and Peers (5-0) stayed perfect in singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Brighiu at the No. 1 spot. The wins gave BU a 6-0 lead in the match, but TCU claimed its only victory of the day as Sanchez got the better of Bley 6-3, 3-6, 12-10 in the last match on.
In its next match, Baylor will head out on the road for the second time this season as the Bears travel to Dallas to face SMU on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 12 p.m. The Bears are 17-28 all-time versus the Mustangs, but they have won the last 14 matches including a 6-1 victory over SMU last season in Waco.
