FORT WORTH, Texas- Baylor's women's tennis team completed a solid first day, winning four of five total matches at the ITA Texas Regional on Friday in Fort Worth, Texas.
The tournament, hosted at TCU, began on Friday and run through Tuesday with the winners earning a qualifying spot in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoors early next month.
Each of the three Baylor singles players won a match, with senior Diana Nakic and sophomore Jordaan Sanford earning a first-round bye prior to their victories to move to the Round of 32. Freshman Megan Horter earned a first-round win, but went on to fall in the Round of 64. In doubles, Sanford and Nakic followed up their first-round bye with a loss.
"We are definitely not playing out best tennis, but we are getting better," head coach Joey Scrivano. "I can really see an improvement from last week, and that's all you can ask for. We are looking forward to the opportunity to keep building. I can see a definite improvement in Megan's (Horter) game from last week. What I like about Jordaan and Diana is that they are getting better at playing the type of tennis that we envision for them."
Nakic, seeded fourth in the tournament, and Sanford, seeded fifth, each collected straight-set victories. Nakic took down Sam Houston State's Imke Jagau 6-2, 6-3, while Sanford downed Texas State's Jessica Kahts 6-2, 6-2. Horter, meanwhile, defeated Mia Matuszak from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-2, 6-1, but fell to Texas Tech's Samantha Adams 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles, Sanford and Nakic teamed together for the first time with a No. 3 seed and defeated TAMU-CC's Mirna Cicak and Stefania Nicolae easily, 8-2.
Baylor continues play in the singles Round of 32 and the doubles Round of 16 on Saturday in the ITA Texas Regional in Fort Worth, Texas.
