FORT WORTH, Texas - Baylor sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin III is one of 30 student-athletes on the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List, as announced by the Davey O'Brien Foundation Wednesday.

Griffin, a native of Copperas Cove, Texas, is one of five quarterbacks from the Big 12 Conference on the initial watch list. The list was compiled by The O'Brien National Selection Committee based on player performance during the previous season and expectations heading into the 2010 college football season.

In addition to being selected fourth-team preseason All-Big 12 by Phil Steele's preseason publication, Griffin has been named to the 2010 Manning Award watch list, and is the No. 17 rated QB in the nation according to Lindy's. The Sporting News lists Griffin as the Big 12's "Best Athlete," while Lindy's ranks the QB as the league's "Best Scrambler."

Quarterbacks from all 120 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Oct. 25. The three finalists will be selected on Nov. 22, and the 2010 winner will be announced on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show on Dec. 9. The 34th Annual O'Brien Awards Dinner will be held Feb. 21 at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

A former Freshman All-America selection in 2008, Griffin is coming off a sophomore season cut short by a knee injury in his third game. The dual-threat quarterback has thrown for 2,572 yards and run for 920 yards in 15 career games in addition to earning All-America status in track and field in 2008. Griffin's hardship waiver request was approved by the Big 12 Conference and he retains three seasons of eligibility and will remain a sophomore in 2010.
