COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Nick Lyons led the Baylor track and field team with a third-place finish in the javelin on the first day of competition at the 2010 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Audrey J. Walton Stadium in Columbia, Mo.

With only competitors in the 10,000-meter men's and women's finals and the men's javelin, Baylor had a light first day as a team.

"I was really proud of the way our 10k racers competed hard to start off the day," head coach Todd Harbour said. "We had a great javelin competition, and Nick just went out there and did a great job."

Lyons, who owns Baylor's javelin school record at 239-7, entered the finals with a toss of 209-7 in fifth place, but ripped off his biggest throw in the finals. On the first throw of the final round, he uncorked a toss of 229-06 to move up two spots to third.

In the 10,000 meters, junior Katie Shaw placed 10th in the women's race with a time of 36:01.81, while junior Jeff Sadler ran a five-second personal best for a time of 31:01.13 to place 18th on the men's side. Brandon Reed placed 21st for the men with a time of 31:46.76.

The Bears will be back in action tomorrow both track and field events beginning at 1 p.m. Field events begin with the women's long jump, while the track events will start with the prelims of the women's 1,500 meters.
