WACO, Texas - Baylor's ninth-ranked men's tennis team squeaked out a 4-3 victory over the 38th-ranked Nebraska Huskers on Sunday evening at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Bears raised their record to 17-5 on the season and 1-2 in Big 12 action while Nebraska falls to 13-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.
"We got what we expected tonight, we knew Nebraska was going to have a great team. The results have shown they were going to be super competitive and they were. We were fortunate we won a match 7-5 in the third to get the job done and we are thrilled to have it. We needed a win desperately and hopefully we can take a week and start working on some of our weaknesses and be ready to play some good tennis up in Oklahoma next weekend," said head coach Matt Knoll.
Doubles play proved to be the deciding factor in the contest when the two teams split the six singles matches.
The Bears claimed victory on courts two and three in doubles when Maros Horny and Sergio Ramirez walked off the court first with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Andre Stenger and Brandon Videtich. Next, the 78th-ranked doubles tandem of Attila Bucko and Julian Bley claimed their first Big 12 win with an 8-6 triumph over Francois Van Impe and Benedikt Lindheim. At the top doubles spot, Nebraska's Calin Paar and David Bendheim downed Denes Lukacs and Roberto Maytin, 9-8 (7-4).
Baylor looked to be in serious trouble after dropping the first set in five of the six singles matches. Bley, playing at No. 6, was the only Bear to win his first set.
"I honestly felt like we felt a little pressure tonight. We were a little beaten down having lost two big matches this week. I think we had a little bit of a hangover from that, more emotional than physical, but we need a couple days off and we will get fresh and play better," said Knoll.
The Huskers jumped out to a 2-1 lead with straight-set singles victories on courts two and three. Paar, ranked No. 92, downed the 32nd-ranked Rux at No. 2, 6-4, 6-4, and Van Impe defeated Bucko, ranked No. 109, 6-3, 6-4, on No. 3. Baylor gained two more points with victories at courts five and six with a straight- set win by Bley over Eric Sock, 6-2, 6-0, and a three-set triumph by Dominik Mueller, 6-7 (10-8), 6-1, 6-2, over Stenger.
With two singles matches still on the court, the Bears needed to win just one to claim the match. When Mueller's match ended, BU's Lukacs and Nebraska's Paar were tied 4-4 in the third set at court one and Maytin and Lindheim were knotted at 2-2 in the final set on court four. At that point, Paar took a 5-4 lead over Lukacs but the Baylor senior reeled off wins in three straight games to claim the victory (4-6, 6-1, 7-5) and clinch the match for the Bears. Lukacs is now 20-1 all-time in Big 12 Conference matches. Lindheim eventually gained the Huskers' third point when he posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Ramirez.
"When you see Denes (Lukacs) and Dominik (Mueller) both winning late in third sets that is kind of what seniors are supposed to do. They led us tonight with those great results and it was enough. Denes is not playing that great and I think he would tell you he really had to dig down to get the win and we needed him, so I thought that was great," said Knoll.
The victory extends Baylor's win streak over the Huskers to 19 matches and 19-0 under Matt Knoll's direction. Overall, BU leads the series 19-3.
The Bears continue Big 12 play with two matches in Oklahoma. Baylor will play at Oklahoma on Friday, April 16 at 6 p.m. then at Oklahoma State on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
