AUSTIN, Texas - With just a handful of student-athletes competing on the second of the four-day 83rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, the 4x800-meter relay men fought through the wind to place second in the event on Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Gavyn Nero led off the 4x800-meter relay for the men, kicking his way to the front of the pack on the homestretch, before handing off to Zac Flowers. Flowers passed the baton to Chris Gowell, who gave it to James Gilreath in fourth-place. Gilreath made his move on the backstretch of his second lap, then nearly pulled off a 30-meter comeback on LSU, finishing in second-place with a time of 7:30.49.
On the track for the women, Christina Holland qualified for Saturday's finals in the 400-meter hurdles by winning her heat with the second-fastest time of the day of 59.70. In the men's 400-meter hurdles was just outside of qualifying for the final, placing third in his heat and 15th overall with a time of 53.65. Phil Raaf placed seventh in his heat and 30th overall with a time of 55.08.
In the women's 4x800-meter relay, the team of Kathryn Benvegnu, Lizzy Whitney, Loren Hodges and Nichole Jones battled the strong wind to a seventh place finish. They combined for a time of 9:10.55.
Pole vaulter Joe Farley was lone field event competitor on the day for the Bears, placing fifth in the `B' Section of the men's pole vault. Farley cleared a height of 16-5.25, making the attempt on his first vault.
Baylor will be back in action on Friday morning at the Texas Relays with the 4x100-meter relay beginning on the track at 9:30 a.m.
