Track Opens Outdoor Season at Rice

HOUSTON - Baylor's track and field team opened the outdoor season at the Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University in Houston, Texas, on Saturday.

In the throwing events, freshman Skylar White opened the outdoor season with a school record toss in the shot put to finish in second with a throw of 48-11.5. White also took top honors in the discus with a throw of 165-03, 12 feet more than the nearest competitor. For the men, Nick Lyons out-distanced the competition in the javelin by nearly 27 feet with a throw of 211-06 to get the event win.

Freshman Christina Holland collected the lone event win for the Bears on the track, taking top honors in the 400-meter hurdles. Holland finished the race in a time of 51.79 in her first career race at the distance. She also placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.30, along with running a leg on Baylor's second-place 4x400-meter relay team. Holland teamed up with Simone Brinkley, Tiana Hood, and Diamond Richardson for a time of 3:45.49.

The Baylor men's relays turned in solid efforts on the day with second-place finishes in both the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay. Marcus Boyd, Whitney Prevost, Courtney Thomas and Trey Harts turned in a time of 40.18, while Prevost, J.T. Scheuerman, Drew Seale and James Gilreath broke the meet record with a time of 3:05.67.

On the track, Thomas and Prevost each placed in the top four of the 100 meters, while Zwede Hewitt, Gilreath and Scheuerman each finished in the top five in the 400 meters. Thomas covered 100 meters in 10.58 to finish third, while Prevost finished fourth in 10.60. In the 400 meters, Hewitt finished in 46.85 to place second ,while Gilreath was at 47.22 in third, and Scheuerman clocked a time of 48.01 to finish fifth.

Also for the men, Thaddeus Gordon placed second in the 400-meter hurdles at 51.79 and Zac Flowers was the top finisher for Baylor in the 800 meters in seventh place at 1:54.14.

For the Baylor women, Diamond Richardson turned in a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 54.20, while Kathryn Benvegnu and Lizzy Whitney were sixth and seventh in the 800 meters at 2:15.23 and 2:15.35.

The Baylor track and field team will be back in action at the Texas Relays from Wednesday through Sunday, March 31 to April 1 in Austin, Texas, on the campus of the University of Texas.
