WACO, Texas - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), in cooperation with State Farm, announced the All-Region nominees for the 2010 State Farm Coaches' All-America Team for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. The State Farm Coaches' All-America Team selection committee will review these 52 candidates and cut the list to 40 finalists on Tuesday, March 23. The 40 finalists will all be in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches' All-America Team.
Baylor freshman Brittney Griner earned State Farm €ˆCoaches' All-Region 5 honors and is a candidate for the 2010 State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team. Former Lady Bear Sophia Young became Baylor's first two-time WBCA All-American with selections in 2005 and `06. Suzie Snider Eppers was Baylor's first WBCA All-American in 1977 and Sheila Lambert was honored in 2002.
Griner, a 6-8 post from Houston, Texas, is averaging a team-leading 18.9 points and 8.6 rebounds a game this season, which ranks among the NCAA €ˆDivision I and Big 12 Conference leaders. In addition, she has blocked 183 shots which ranks No. 2 nationally. Griner was recently named All-Big 12 first team, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year and to the league's All-Defensive team. She broke the Big 12 Conference record for blocks in a game (11, four times), season blocks (183) and already ranks No. 10 on the league's career block list. In addition, she has recorded three triple-doubles, which leads NCAA €ˆDivision I, and 14 double-doubles.
The State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team for NCAA Division I will be announced in the Alamodome on Center Court between open practices on Saturday, April, 3 at 1:05 p.m. (CDT) as part of the NCAA's Super Saturday events in San Antonio, Texas.
Griner is joined on the seven-member All-Region 5 team by Danielle Adams and Tanisha Smith from Texas A&M, Kelsey Griffin of Nebraska, Iowa State's Alison Lacey, Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley and Danielle Robinson of Oklahoma.
