KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Baylor juniors LaceDarius Dunn and Ekpe Udoh were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District 8 second team Tuesday. It marks the first time that Baylor has multiple NABC All-District selections.
A year after winning the Big 12 Sixth Man Award, Dunn became of the league's best scorers, averaging 19.4 points and a league-best 3.3 3-point field goals per game. The second-team All-Big 12 selection is quickly ascending both the Baylor career points and Big 12 career 3-point charts. Dunn, who currently ranks seventh all-time at Baylor with 1,655 career points, is 22 points shy of breaking the top five. The Monroe, La., native is the Baylor career leader for 3-point field goals made (288) and free throw percentage (84.0). Dunn ranks fifth all-time in Big 12 history with 288 treys.
Udoh, who established Baylor and Big 12 season-season records with 124 blocked shots this season, was named to the USBWA All-District VII team last week. The second-team All-Big 12 pick and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year is averaging 13.9 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.9 blocks in 32 games. Udoh is the first Baylor player in the Big 12 era named newcomer of the year and only the third player in program history to garner top newcomer honors - Terry (1979) and Jerome Lambert (1994) were both named Southwest Conference Newcomer of the Year.
Nicknamed "The Nightmare", his 3.88 blocks per game average currently ranks first all-time on Baylor's single-season and career lists. The Edmond, Okla., native posted a team-best 14 double-doubles, while establishing career-best single-game and single-season marks in points, rebounding, assists and blocked shots.
Members of the All-District 8 first team were Cole Aldrich (Kansas), James Anderson (Oklahoma State), Sherron Collins (Kansas), Damion James (Texas) and Donald Sloan (Texas A&M). Joining Dunn and Udoh and the second team were Craig Brackins (Iowa State), Marcus Morris (Kansas) and Jacob Pullen (Kansas State).
The NABC Division I All-District teams recognize the nation's best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes. Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, these student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across America. The 240 student-athletes, from 24 districts, are eligible for the State Farm Division I All-America teams, to be announced on Saturday, April 3, at 11 a.m. (EDT) at Bracket TownTM in the Indianapolis Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind., during the NABC Convention and NCAA ® Final Four ®.
About the National Association of Basketball Coaches
Located in Kansas City, Mo., the NABC was founded in 1927 by Forrest "Phog" Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas. Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently claims nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men's basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today's student-athletes. The four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education. Additional information about the NABC, its programs and membership, can be found at www.nabc.com.
