ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Baylor's fifth-ranked women's tennis team will take on one of their toughest opponents of the season when they travel to No. 8 Michigan on Friday, Feb. 26 for a top 10 matchup.
The Lady Bears are 2-0 this season against top-10 competition, with wins at then-No. 6 Miami and in a neutral site match against then-No. 8 USC. Led by undefeated singles seasons from senior Lenka Broosova (5-0) and sophomore Nina Secerbegovic (7-0), the Lady Bears are off to a 6-1 record overall. The only loss of the season for BU is against then-No. 11 North Carolina. The Tar Heels have since moved up to No. 2 in the latest ITA team rankings. BU has five singles players ranked with Broosova at No. 9, Secerbegovic at No. 25, Taylor Ormond at No. 91, Csilla Borsanyi at No. 105 and Jelena Stanivuk at No. 123.
Head coach Joey Scrivano's squad has also gotten consistent play from his other singles and doubles positions. For the season, the Lady Bears hold a 24-11 dual-match singles record and a 13-6 dual-match doubles record. Karolina Filipiak (4-1), Ormond (4-2), and Carla Lindlar (4-3) have each contributed four wins.
In doubles, Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, ranked No. 12, have had the hot hand with a 5-1 record, including a win over the No. 3 duo from Miami of Laura Vallverdu and Gabriella Mejia. Filipiak has also been spectacular in doubles with a 6-1 record. She is 2-0 with Ormond as a partner, and 4-1 with Secerbegovic.
Baylor is 1-0 all-time with a win in 2009 against the Wolverines, who are led by third-year head coach Ronni Bernstein. In her first two seasons, Bernstein led Michigan to a 37-13 overall record, including an 18-2 mark in Big Ten play. UM is 7-3 this season, with one top-10 win, a defeat of then-No. 6 Miami. The Wolverines have lost three of their last six matches after a 4-0 start, which includes losses to No. 4 Florida and No. 6 Duke.
On the court, Michigan is led by one ranked player, No. 16 Denise Muresan, who has compiled a 6-4 record at the No. 1 singles position. The Wolverines also have Mimi Nguyen, who has an 8-2 record, and Michelle Sulahian, who is 7-2 on the season. Two UM duos have compiled a 9-1 record on the season with the combos of Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno, as well as Nguyen and Sulahian.
The match is set to begin with doubles action at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.
