WACO, Texas - The 13th-ranked men's tennis extended its home win streak to 13 matches by knocking off Prairie View A&M and UT Arlington each by a 7-0 margin Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
"It was what we expected in terms of just getting a lot of matches in," head coach Matt Knoll said. "It is nice to get back outside and get used to this environment again. As a group I thought we had some great performances in terms of just managing matches and staying on top of the opponent."
With the two wins, Baylor improves to 8-2 on the year and is on a three-match win streak. Overall, Baylor has won 23 of 26 matches and 25 of 26 contests in Waco. With the two shutout victories, Baylor has now notched seven shutout wins in 10 matches this spring. Baylor only had 10 shutouts all of last year.
The two victories also give the Bears a 34-1 record in the Matt Knoll era against opponents on days when they play more than one match.
Prairie View A&M Match
The Bears began the day by dispatching of the Prairie View A&M Panthers by winning all three doubles matches and posting five two-set singles wins.
In doubles all three of Baylor's tandems jumped out to 3-0 leads and then coasted to easy victories. Sergio Ramirez and Dominik Mueller got the winning started by taking down Jose Garcia and Christopher Jordan 8-0, then Denes Lukacs and Roberto Maytin partnered together for the first time ever to defeat Ronald Chidzikwe and Kuda Nyatoti, 8-1. With the doubles point clinched the 15th-ranked pairing of Jordan Rux and Maros Horny blanked Kristen Powell and Craig Wiltz, 8-0.
"We gave a couple new doubles pairings for the spring a chance to play," Knoll said. "We put Jordan and Maros back together. We were able to get Maytin and Lukacs some matches, so that was great. We feel like that might be a direction for us to head."
In singles, Baylor did not play its usual top three players of Lukacs, Rux and Attila Bucko, but the Bears did not miss a beat as Ramirez beat Jordan 6-0, 6-1, Julian Bley defeated Chidzikwe 6-0, 6-0 and Mueller playing his first match ever at the No. 1 position crushed Nyatoti 6-0, 6-2 to clinch the match.
Horny earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Wiltz, Maytin got past Garcia 6-2, 7-5 and Chris Gordon playing in his first dual match at Baylor hung on to beat Powell 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(7) to give the Bears the clean sweep.
The Panthers fall to 1-5 with the loss and 0-3 all-time versus Baylor.
UT Arlington Match
The Bears got off to a good start in their second match of the day as Lukacs and Maytin blew past Jason Lateko and Adam Srkala, 8-1. The 15th-ranked duo of Rux and Horny followed that performance with an 8-1 victory of their own over Dmitry Minkin and Mindaugas Celedinas. With the doubles point clinched the 60th-ranked pairing of Bucko and Bley beat Brieuc Hamon and Yauheni Yakauleu, 8-4.
In singles, Horny got the Bears started by blowing past David Subirats 6-1, 6-1. Bucko claimed the next point for Baylor winning 6-0, 7-5 over Hamon. To clinch the point Bley at the No. 6 position defeated Giacomo Sano 6-1, 6-1. Bley finished his match only minutes before Maytin disposed of Yakauleau 6-3, 6-2. To end the match Baylor's two ranked players, No. 20 Lukacs and No. 26 Rux, each cruised to straight set wins. Lukacs dominated Minkin 6-2, 6-1 while Rux won 6-1, 6-4 over Celedinas.
The Mavericks fall to 1-4 on the year as Baylor extended its win streak to eight matches over UTA. The Bears lead the all-time series 9-5.
With today's matches Lukacs raises his dual match record to 8-0, Bley moves to 3-0 and Mueller is now 8-1, while Rux is 7-1.
"Julian is just a great story this year," Knoll said. "He was totally in the dog pound at the beginning of spring. He didn't really get a sniff in the singles and just kind of hung around. He out worked guys in practice day in and day out, never complained, never showed any negative energy. He just fought every single day and then when his chance came he took advantage of it and now he is in."
The Bears will next be in action on Wednesday, Feb. 24 when they take on third-ranked Ohio State at 3 pm.
"It is another good opportunity we have a bunch of them ahead of us," Knoll said of the match with Ohio State. "We are excited for it and hopefully we will be good enough to meet the challenge. We got to continue to execute better. We got to continue to compete hard for the close sets. It is going to be a tough match."
