IRVING, Texas - Ten Baylor football student-athletes earned Big 12 Conference yearly honors, as voted on by the league's coaches and announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin III was one of three selections for honorable mention Offensive Player of the year, and Baylor head coach Art Briles was one of four choices for honorable mention Coach of the Year.
Griffin III, junior wide receiver Kendall Wright, senior offensive tackle Danny Watkins and senior defensive tackle Phil Taylor were named to the All-Big 12 football second team.
RG3, Wright and Watkins became the first trio of Baylor offensive players to be named to the first or second teams during the Big 12 era. The Bears had four players named to the first and second teams for the second consecutive season, something Baylor had never previously accomplished during the Big 12 era.
Junior center Philip Blake, senior punter Derek Epperson, senior running back Jay Finley, senior linebacker Antonio Johnson, freshman place kicker Aaron Jones and senior safety Byron Landor were honorable mention selections.
Wright was named to the All-Big 12 team for the second consecutive season after being an honorable mention choice in 2009, while Epperson earned all-conference honors for the third time in his career (honorable mention 2008, 2010; first team 2009).
Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon (Offensive), Nebraska's Prince Amukamara (Defensive) and Oklahoma State's Dan Bailey (Special Teams) were named Players of the Year, while Mike Gundy of Oklahoma State was named Coach of the Year.
Baylor (7-5, 4-4 Big 12) is expected to make its first bowl appearance since the 1994 Alamo Bowl. The Bears, who are bowl eligible for the first time since 1995, will receive their bowl bid on Sunday. To pre-order tickets for the bowl game, call the Baylor Athletics Ticket Office at 254-710-1000 or 800-BAYLOR-U (option 7).
