TULSA, Okla. - The Baylor men's tennis team suffered a quartet of losses on Tuesday at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships as all four Bears in action were eliminated from tournament play.
Kike Grangeiro and Sergio Ramirez were ousted from the second round of singles qualifying play, the doubles duo of Roberto Maytin and John Peers faltered in second round qualifying action and Maytin dropped his singles consolation match.
"It was a tough day today," head coach Matt Knoll said. "The tournament was great for us. We got to see that we have a lot of stuff to work on. We are a long way from being the team that we hope to be. We have to get after it in practice this week."
A day after capturing a three-set win in the opening round of the 128-man qualifying draw , Grangeiro was dealt a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set loss by Chris Mengel of Duke, who was one of 16 players to advance out of the pre-qualifying draw. The loss left the junior Bear with a 1-1 record in Tulsa and a 3-2 record in fall play.
"Kike just wasn't physical enough," Knoll said. "He came in not really in great condition and I think he is a little broken down. He played a really tough match against a tough player yesterday and he just didn't have his legs under him today."
Ramirez, who had made his way out of the pre-qualifying draw with three wins on Saturday and Sunday, failed to keep his tournament run alive as he fell to Mississippi State's Malte Stropp, 6-1, 6-1. For the tournament the Baylor senior posted a 4-1 record, upping his season record to 8-4.
"Sergio did not have a real clear plan and his opponent did a great job," Knoll said. "I think it is something we have to work on. We have to plan on what we are going to do to help Sergio get better. In overview though, he had a good week. He won four matches. That is a good tournament for him."
Baylor's 57th-ranked duo of Maytin and Peers garnered Baylor's only win of the day. The tandem opened with an 8-1 thrashing of Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson of North Carolina State in the first round of the 64-team doubles qualifying draw. However, Maytin and Peers followed that performance by dropping an 8-5 decision to Aleksey Bessonov and Rifat Biktyakov of Oklahoma State.
"John and Bobby served better in their first match," Knoll said. "I thought Oklahoma State played better and we just weren't as sharp on our service game. We had several games on return where we had opportunities and just weren't able to execute it. Those guys played well and deserved to win."
It was the first loss of the season for Maytin and Peers, dropping their record to 6-1 in fall play. Earlier in the season the Baylor pair had gotten the better of the Cowboy tandem in the doubles finals of the HEB Baylor's Men's Invitational on Sept. 26.
Maytin also fell in his singles consolation match, 6-1, 6-3, to Yannick Weihs of Denver. In singles, Maytin was 0-2 at the tournament, which drops his fall record to 4-4.
Peers, ranked No. 28 in singles, will be the final Baylor player participating in the event when he opens up play in the singles main draw on Thursday as one of 22 at-large selections into the 64-player field.
