TULSA, Okla. - On the first day of qualifying play at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships, the Baylor men's tennis went 2-1 as Kike Grangeiro and Sergio Ramirez won three-set matches to advance to the second round of play, while teammate Roberto Maytin dropped his opening match.

Grangeiro lost a hard-fought first set, 7-6, by falling 9-7 in a tiebreaker to Dennis Lajola of Hawai'I at Manoa. The Baylor junior then bounced back to win the second set, 6-4, and captured the contest with a 7-6 win in the third set that came down to a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker. Grangeiro will now face Chris Megel of Duke on Tuesday in the second round.

"I thought Kike did a great job of fighting to win the match," head coach Matt Knoll said. "He lost the first in a tiebreaker and the thing that I liked was you couldn't tell he lost the set. He was still in the match and competing well. It was just a super match. He got a lot of great things out of it. I am just happy he was about to fight it out and get the win."

Ramirez having already won three matches in the last two days in the prequalifying draw came out firing in his first qualifying match with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 win over Steven Rooda of Virginia. The senior advances to face Malte Stropp of Mississippi State on Tuesday.

"Sergio got up 5-1 in the first and was really playing some good tennis," Knoll said. "The kind of tennis we are striving for. It wasn't fancy; there wasn't anything flashy about it. It was just good, solid Sergio Ramirez tennis. Then he did lose his focus a little bit and the guy picked it up. It was a battle from then on out. He was down a break late in the third and did a great job to get through it."

The sophomore Maytin was not as successful as his two teammates as he dropped a 6-3, 6-2 contest to Kyle McMorrow of Washington. The loss puts the Valencia, Venezuela, native, into the consolation bracket.

"Roberto just didn't have a good day at the office," Knoll said. "The guy served well and didn't really give him a chance to get back in it, after a poor start. I think the thing for Roberto is we have a lot of things in can work on in the consolation match he gets to play."

Maytin will also begin play in the doubles qualifying doubles draw on Tuesday with partner John Peers as the 57th-ranked duo takes on Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson of North Carolina State.

Peers, ranked No. 28 in singles, will open up play in the main draw on Thursday as one of 22 at-large selections into the 64-player field.
