STILLWATER, Okla. - The Baylor men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2010 Big 12 Championships in Stillwater, Okla., at the OSU Cross Country Course on Oct. 30, 2010. The top team in each race will be crowned Big 12 Champions, while the top 15 runners in each race will earn All-Big 12 honors.
The 6,000-meter women's race will start the day at 10 a.m., followed by the 8,000-meter men's race at 11 a.m. The men's field consists of three teams ranked in the USTFCCCA rankings, including No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 9 Colorado. On the women's side, four teams are ranked n the top 15, including No. 4 Texas Tech, No. 7 Colorado, No. 11 Iowa State and No. 15 Texas.
On the men's side, Baylor returns each of its top five from the 2009 team that finished 11th overall, include the top BU finisher Robbie Knorr, who placed a team-best 34th in the meet. Joining Knorr will be returners Jeff Sadler, Brandon White, Brandon Reed, Ben Haby and Taylor Jackson, along with newcomers Gavyn Nero and Brad Miles.
This season, the Baylor men have collected two team victories, winning the Bear Twilight Invitational on the opening weekend, and then taking the title at the UTA Season Opener one week later. Knorr was the top finisher for the Bears at the Bear Twilight with a second-place showing. Miles, a freshman, led BU at the UTA meet with a third-place finish.
For the women, Baylor returns just one of its top five runners from the 2009 team that finished in seventh place at the conference meet. Junior Cate Westenhover was the fourth finish at last year's league championship, but has filled BU's top role nicely, finishing as the top Baylor runner in each of her three races.
Westenhover led a 1-2-4 BU finish at the Bear Twilight Invitational to help the Bears win the team title. Leigh Ann Ganzar finished second, and Kristen Hanselka was fourth in the race. The trio is joined by returners Katie Shaw, Samantha Patty and Lindsay Warner. Newcomers Robyn Bennett, Samantha Allen and Ruby Tellez will each compete in their first conference championship race.
