WACO, Texas - Baylor men's tennis junior Jordan Rux made quick work of two ranked opponents Sunday to earn the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate A draw singles title at the Baylor Tennis Center. Following his singles triumph Rux partnered with sophomore Maros Horny to claim the A draw doubles title as well.

"These were great matches to start the season again," men's tennis coach Matt Knoll said. "Jordan clearly had a terrific weekend. He has developed a lot in the last year and it is exciting to see that begin to bear fruit."

The fourth-seeded Rux took down the tournament's No.1 seed and the country's No. 1 player in the ITA preseason rankings, Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State, in the semifinals Sunday morning 6-4, 7-6(4) to advance to the afternoon's tournament final.

In the finals Rux, ranked No. 29 in the preseason rankings, was even more dominant dispatching Moritz Baumann of Wisconsin, the tournament's No. 2 seed and the country's 19th-ranked player, 6-2, 6-2.

"I thought the singles title was especially significant, because he beat the one and two seeds," Knoll said. "He didn't sneak in the back door to win the tournament, he had to beat the top two guys to win. He did a super job managing the situation and playing some good tennis."

Rux did not lose a single set in his six tournament matches in route to earning a Baylor player's sixth title in the Intercollegiate's ninth year. Rux joins Benedikt Dorsch who won the event in 2002 and '03, Matija Zgaga who triumphed in 2004, Lars Poerschke who claimed the 2005 crown and Michal Kokta who was the 2006 champ.

After the singles competition, Rux and Horny, the third-seeded duo in the tournament and the 25th-ranked pairing in the country, rolled to an 8-3 win over Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile of Texas Tech.

"To bounce back and play that well in the doubles, I thought was impressive (for Rux) as well," Knoll said. "He played a lot of tennis this weekend, six singles and five doubles, that is a ton of tennis in these conditions. I was really happy for he and Maros to win the doubles."

It was the fourth time in nine years a Baylor tandem has captured the Baylor Intercollegiate title. The duo who had never played together in competition before this weekend joined Lars Poerschke and Jon Reckewey in 2005, Benedikt Dorsch and Ivor Lovrak in 2003 and Reiner Neurohr and Markus Hornung in 2001 as Baylor tournament champions.

Rux joins Poerschke (2005) and Dorsch (2003) as the only Bears to stand on top of the podium in both singles and doubles in the same year at the Baylor Intercollegiate.

"I was looking at the trophies today and it is incredible the quality of guys that have won this tournament over the years," Knoll said. "For Jordan to get his name on that trophy is really neat. It is elite company and I hope it something Jordan can aspire too and get better."
