SAN ANTONIO, Texas - After playing 97:14 of scoreless soccer, Baylor junior Lotto Smith ended the game with a goal in the first overtime to lead the Bears (4-1-2) to a 1-0 win over UTSA (3-5-1) Sunday afternoon in San Antonio. The win moves the Bears to 1-0-2 in overtime matches this season.
"It was one of those games where the more we missed our chances, the more confident they got," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We did some really good things and we started the game very fast in the opening 20 minutes. We need to do a better job of finishing our chances, but I am glad we finally got the win in overtime."
The Bears outshot their opponent for the seventh time this season, holding an 18-8 advantage in the game. Baylor came out on fire, taking 11 shots in the opening half, while the Bears' defense did not allow a single one from the Roadrunners.
UTSA countered in the second half, taking eight shots to BU's six, but the game remained scoreless at the end of regulation.
In overtime, senior Lara Doherty pushed the ball ahead inside the 18 yard box and found Smith, who ricochet a shot off a defender and into the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Freshman Chelsea Geller led the way with four shots, two on goal, while Smith had a pair of shots, both on goal. Senior Gianna Quintana and sophomore Courtney Seelhorst combined for the shutout, the fourth of the season for Baylor.
The Bears will return home for a pair of rivalry games at Betty Lou Mays Field, beginning with No. 17 Texas A&M on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 p.m. Baylor will then host Texas on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
