WACO, Texas - Baylor women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey is one of 10 individuals selected to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame it was announced on Tuesday.
Since taking over as Baylor's head coach in 2000, Mulkey has built the Lady Bears into a consistent national power. Her teams have won more than 20 games every season, and in 2005, Baylor claimed the NCAA championship, becoming the first Big 12 program to win a women's or men's national basketball championship. Mulkey, along with Dean Smith and Bob Knight, are the only people ever to have won an NCAA basketball title as both a player and coach.
Throughout her nine seasons, Mulkey has posted a 237-66 (.782) mark which ranks the Lady Bear program sixth-best nationally in winning percentage during that time period.
Joining Mulkey in the class of 2009 are former BU football great Lawrence Elkins, former Dallas Cowboys Harvey Martin, Chuck Howley and Dan Reeves; ex-Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tommy Kramer; and longtime Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams. In addition, Houston Astros slugger Lance Berkman, former University of Texas baseball standout Burt Hooton and American Basketball Association pioneer Max Williams are slated to be honored.
Mulkey is also a member of the following Halls of Fame: Women's Basketball (2000), Baylor Athletics (2007), CoSIDA Academic All-America (2003), Louisiana Tech (1992), Louisiana Sports Writers (1990), Louisiana High School (1986), National High School (1985).
"I am very humbled and honored," said Mulkey, "I don't coach to go into halls of fame, but I've been blessed with great players and have worked with some great coaches, and to even be considered or nominated is a testament to all those people."
