WACO, Texas - In attendance figures released recently by the NCAA, the Baylor Lady Bear women's basketball team finished 12th nationally with an average of 6,558 fans a game.
The Lady Bears tallied 104,925 fans for 2008-09, registering their fourth-straight 100,000-plus attendance season. Baylor was one of just 11 programs nationally to draw more than 100,000 fans. The 2008-09 campaign in which Baylor ranked No. 5 nationally and finished the season with a 29-6 record, marked its fifth straight top14 finish in the NCAA attendance rankings. Baylor's 6,558 fans per game and 104,925 for the season both rank No. 3 all-time on the Lady Bears' attendance charts.
In addition, Big 12 women's basketball led the nation in attendance for the 10th straight season while reaching the one million mark for the fourth time in conference history. The league totaled an NCAA record 1,073,069 fans for an average of 5,312 per game.
The cumulative attendance bettered the Conference's previous NCAA high mark of 1,023,576 set in the 2006-07 season. The Big 12 remains the only conference to reach the one-million fan mark, also accomplishing the feat in 2007-08 (1,010,528) and 2001-02 (1,002,251).
Ten Big 12 schools were ranked in the Top 50 for average home attendance with eight listed in the Top 25. Iowa State led the Big 12 contingent in third (9,754) while Oklahoma was close behind in fourth (9,007). Other Big 12 rankings included 7. Texas Tech (8,576), 12. Baylor (6,558), 16. Texas (5,288), 17. Texas A&M (5,256), 20. Kansas State (4,625), 25. Kansas (4,109), 39. Oklahoma State (3,258) and 40. Nebraska (3,211).
