NORMAN, Okla. - The Baylor men's and women's track and field teams qualified eight to Saturday's event finals during the first day of competition at the 2009 NCAA Midwest Regional meet at John Jacobs Field.
Trey Harts and Tiffany Townsend both led Baylor by qualifying in two individual events and running legs on Baylor's 4x100-meter relays.
Harts clocked the fastest time of the 200-meter preliminaries at 20.41, while his time of 10.31 in the 100 meters was the second-fastest of the day. The men's 4x100-meter relay finished second in its heat and fifth overall with a time of 39.78.
Townsend had the fourth-fastest time of the preliminaries in the 200 meters, winning her heat in 23.24. Her time of 11.37 in the 100 meters was the sixth-fastest of the prelims. The women's 4x100-meter relay recorded the fifth-fastest time at 44.66.
Nick Lyons finished eighth overall in the men's javelin with a mark of 63.73m (209-01), and will be eligible for an at-large berth in the NCAA Championships to be announced next week. DeAna Carson finished seventh in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.08m (19-11 ½) and will also be eligible for an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships.
Chris Gowell clocked the second-fastest time of the preliminaries of the 800 meters at 1:48.14 to advance to Saturday's event finals, while Katrina Taylor recorded a time of 54.02 in the 400 meters to qualify for the event finals.
