WACO, Texas - The Baylor Lady Bear basketball program signed Brooklyn Pope, a 6-1 forward/guard, to a Letter of Athletic Aid head coach Kim Mulkey announced on Tuesday. Pope, a transfer from the Rutgers University, intends to begin classes at Baylor in June. Pope will sit out the 2009-10 season in order to comply with NCAA transfer rules; she will have three seasons of eligibility beginning with the 2010-11 season but is eligible to practice with the Lady Bears next year.
As a freshman for the Scarlet Knight, Pope appeared in 29 of the team's 34 games and logged one start. The 6-1 forward/guard averaged 2.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 6.0 minutes a game in 2008-09.
Pope enjoyed a highly successful high school career while attending Dunbar High School in Fort Worth, Texas. She was rated the No. 8 incoming freshman in the nation by Blue Star Girls Report, No. 9 overall by hoopgurlz.com and ranked as the No. 1 forward by Scout.com. Pope was elected to 2008 McDonald's All-American team where she helped the West squad claim victory. She was tabbed to participate in the 2008 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-America game and named to the Parade All-America second team that same season. She was a four-time all-region selection, averaging 25 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks senior season as a senior at Dunbar HS. Pope averaged nearly 19 points and five blocks as a junior to help the Lady Wildcats claim the 2007 Texas high school basketball Class 4A state championship.
