Junior Danielle Wilson was named to the 2008-09 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 First Team and to the league's All-Defensive Team, while seniors Rachel Allison, Jessica Morrow and Jhasmin Player earned honorable mention honors, the Big 12 Conference announced on Monday. In addition, sophomore Melissa Jones was one of two players voted to receive the Sixth Man Award. The official All-Big 12 awards are selected by the league's head coaches, with coaches not allowed to vote for their own players.
Wilson, a 6-3 post, has led Baylor in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots all season. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native scores 15.1 points, hauls down 9.6 rebounds and rejects 3.07 blocks a contest, all of which ranks among the league leaders.
Wilson's selection marks the eighth time a Lady Bear has earned first-team honors. Sophia Young earned first-team selection three times ( 2004, 2005, 2006), while Sheila Lambert (2001 & 2002), Danielle Crockrom (2001 & 2002) and Steffanie Blackmon (2004 & 2005) were two-time recipients. Bernice Mosby (2007), Rachel Allison (2008) and Angela Tisdale (2008) were named to the elite squad once.
Wilson joins Abiola Wabara (2006), Jhasmin Player (2007) and Allison (2008) as Lady Bear All-Defensive Team honorees.
Jones tied for the third annual Sixth Man Award with Oklahoma's Nyeshia Stevenson. Jones, a 5-10 guard, averages 7.1 points and 5.7 rebounds, which ranks second on the team, in 22.8 minutes per game. She has contributed 46 assists, 44 steals and 11 blocks while hitting 49.3 percent (67-of-136) of her shots. The Thornton, Colo., native is the first Lady Bear to earn the league's Sixth Man Award.
