The top-seeded Baylor equestrian team beat fourth-seed Kansas State in the first round of the 2009 Big 12 Championships. The match ended in an 8-8 tie, but the Lady Bears won the tiebreaker 2146-2109.
"We are hoping to get a good night sleep and be ready to go tomorrow," head coach Ellen White said. "The trophy looks beautiful and we're ready to win it."
After the 5-3 win, Baylor Hunter Seat improves to 12-3 on the season and 5-1 when facing a Big 12 team. In Equitation over Fences, senior Nicole Brown posted her eleventh win (162-150) and third MVP honor of the season. Freshman Lisa Goldman rode for her eighth consecutive win (170-152), while sophomore Kendra Vicary also added (157-155).
In Equitation on the Flat, senior Shelby White recorded her third straight win with her ride against Paige Kovari (140-0). Senior Cara Wilson tallied points (150-122) and now has eight wins on the season.
Kansas State forced the tiebreaker with its 5-3 victory in Western riding. In Horsemanship, junior Allison Orosz added to her seven-match winning streak by downing Courtney Waters (146.5-128). Lindsey Tomko earned MVP honors for the second time this season, her first since facing Texas Christian on Sept. 27.
Reining's lone victory came from freshman Amber Mooney (141.5-129.5), making it her fifth win of the season. Junior Madelyn Mooney garnered MVP honors in her ride against Tara Hallan.
After a 9-6 upset against No. 2 seed Texas A&M, Baylor will advance to face No. 3 seed Oklahoma State in the championship match tomorrow. The Lady Bears defeated the Cowgirls 14-6 in their last meeting on Feb. 14 in Waco, but Oklahoma State clenches the series record at 5-2.
Texas A&M and Kansas State will compete in consolation bracket.
