BATON ROUGE, La. - Erin Bedell set a new school record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational, and Baylor won three events at the LSU Relays on Friday night.
Bedell clocked a time of 9:58.46 to finish third overall in just her third-career steeplechase. The time is a 26-second personal best and broke the school record by 19 seconds. The old school record of 10:17.86 was set last season by Danielle Bradley at the Stanford Invitational. Bradley also broke her old school record, clocking 10:10.17 to finish sixth overall.
At the LSU Relays, Baylor won the women's 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:04.70, clocking a winning margin of 15 seconds. The men's squad won the sprint medley relay as James Gilreath outleaned LSU at the line to post a time of 3:20.03.
"We had a good day for both of our groups," said head coach Todd Harbour. "We had some great PRs at Stanford. For Erin and Danielle to both break the school record is pretty amazing, and then Chris keeps getting better each week. Those were some great efforts."
DeAna Carson won the long jump, leaping 6.26m (20-06 ½) on her final jump. She was in fifth after four jumps, before recording the two top jumps of the competition on her final two attempts.
At the Stanford Invitational, Chris Gowell clocked a personal best time of 3:41.85 to finish second overall in the 1,500 meters. Gowell's time is a 16-second personal best and ranks as the second-fastest time in Baylor history.
Baylor qualified its men's 4x100-meter relay to the event finals with a time of 39.79, the second-fastest time of the preliminaries.
Laszlo Vandracsek qualified fifth in the men's 110-meter hurdles, but pulled up with a hamstring injury during preliminaries of the men's 100 meters. Jessica Gregory qualified for the 100 meters finals with a time of 11.91, the fourth-fastest of the preliminaries.
The men's team qualified three to the finals of the 100 meters. Trey Harts clocked the fastest time of qualifying at 10.41, while Courtney Thomas finished seventh at 10.71 and Whitney Prevost took eighth in 10.73.
The Bears also qualified two for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles. Philip Raaf clocked 52.86 for the fourth-best time, while Thaddeus Gordon finished ninth in 53.94.
"We had two nice relay wins for the LSU group," said Harbour. "DeAna was great in the long jump and we got a lot of people in the finals tomorrow. We survived the weather today and we are looking forward to the finals tomorrow."
Also at the Stanford Invitational, Jodi Hulett set a personal best time of 16:47.46 in the 5,000 meters, while Robbie Knorr clocked 14:24.63 in the 5,000 meters to set a new personal best.
Baylor returns to action on Saturday with the final day of competition at the LSU Relays.
