COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Just seconds before the final buzzer sounded in Baylor's 76-70 upset win over Texas at the Big 12 Basketball Championships, Trey Harts etched his name in the Baylor annals, winning the 200 meters at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Harts clocked a personal-best time of 20.63 to win the event, recording the second-fastest time in Baylor history behind Michael Johnson's 20.59 set at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis in 1989.
"I just made sure that I got out of the blocks hard and that I allowed my body to do what I have trained it to," said Harts. "I had a great time out there. It has been a long time since we have had a 200 meter title come to Baylor. It feels good to get it back. I really want to help build Baylor's prestige in the short sprints."
Harts wins his second NCAA title, after running the leadoff leg on Baylor's winning 4x400-meter relay last season. He becomes the ninth Baylor athlete to win an individual national title, and the first since Jacob Norman claimed the 60 meters championship in 2006. The 200 meter title is the third in Baylor history with Johnson winning titles in 1989 and 1990.
Harts also recorded the fastest time in the 200 meter preliminaries, pacing the field with a time of 20.73.
Tiffany Townsend earned her second indoor All-America honor in the 200 meters, finishing sixth overall with a time of 23.23. She posted the third-fastest time in qualifying at 23.22.
Chris Gowell qualified for the men's 800 meter finals with the fourth-fastest time of the preliminaries at 1:49.19.
The women's distance medley relay finished ninth overall, just missing out on claiming All-America honors for the fourth-straight year. The Lady Bears posted a season-best time of 11:08.50.
LeJerald Betters qualified for the men's 400 meter final. Betters was impeded by another runner in the preliminary heat, forcing the junior inside the rail into the infield. After the runner was disqualified a protest was filed, allowing Betters into the event finals on Saturday afternoon. Marcus Boyd finished 13th overall with a time of 47.43.
Townsend finished ninth in the preliminary rounds of the 60 meters, clocking 7.35. She earns All-America honors as one of the top eight American-born finishers.
Baylor returns to action on Saturday as the Bears compete at Day Two of the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
