COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Trey Harts won double gold, claiming both the 60 and 200 meter titles at the 2009 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Both Baylor squads finished in fourth place overall in the team competition as the women's team recorded 86 points and the men tallied 71 points.
"We had another outstanding day on both sides," said head coach Todd Harbour. "We had a lot of great performances this weekend. Some school records, automatic qualifying times and Big 12 titles. It just doesn't get any better than that. Hopefully we will be as successful in a couple of weeks at NCAAs."
Harts opened the day by winning the men's 60 meters with a time of 6.74. The 60-meter title is the second in Baylor history after Jacob Norman claimed the conference title in 2006. Later, Harts won gold in the men's 200 meters for the second-straight season. On Friday, Harts clocked a personal-best time of 20.66 that ranks as the fastest time in the nation. In Saturday's finals, Harts finished with a time of 20.79. The 200-meter title is the seventh overall for Baylor and the fourth-straight championship for the Bears.
The Baylor 4x400-meter relay won the conference title for the 12th-straight season. The Bears, who also won their 34th-straight race overall, clocked a time of 3:06.92 that ranks as the second-fastest in the world this year.
Harts led off for Baylor with a split of 47.93 seconds. Harts trailed the field at the 200-meter mark, but kicked down the backstretch, passing the baton in first place. Marcus Boyd extended the lead for Baylor with a 45.82-second split.
J.T. Scheuerman clocked a 47.05-second split by himself as the Bears held onto the lead. Scheuerman passed to LeJerald Betters on the anchor leg. Betters clocked a split of 46.13 seconds to give Baylor the win by two seconds.
Nichole Jones claimed her third-straight Big 12 title in the women's 1,000 meters. Jones, who won the event as a freshman to become the youngest champion in conference history, clocked a time of 2:46.51. Danielle Bradley placed fourth in the event.
Jones moves into a tie for first place in Baylor history with five career Big 12 titles (4 individual, 1 relay).
Boyd and Betters finished second and third in the men's 400 meters. Scheuerman took seventh as the Bears scored three athletes in the event. Senior Quentin Iglehart-Summers pulled up midway through the first lap with a leg cramp.
Chris Gowell placed second overall in the men's 800 meters with a season-best time of 1:48.57.
Tiffany Townsend picked up a pair of Top 5 finishes, taking second in the 200 meters and fifth in the 60 meters.
Erin Bedell finished second overall in the women's 3,000 meters, setting an NCAA automatic qualifying time in 9:14.78.
The women's 4x400-meter relay took second overall with a season-best time of 3:38.34. Katrina Taylor led off with a split of 54.83 seconds, passing the baton in a tie for first place overall. Tiffany Townsend faded to third place after the first lap, but made a strong kick into the lead to hand off in first place with a 54.99-second split.
Brittany Bruce held the lead for the first lap, but was passed by Big 12 400 meter champion Jessica Beard over the second 200 meters. Bruce split 54.79 seconds, handing off in second place. Diamond Richardson, who finished fifth in the open 400 meters, closed the lead on Texas A&M after 200 meters, and moved into the lead on the backstretch of the second lap. Porsha Lucas, the 200 meter champion, kicked down the homestretch to pass Richardson, who split 53.74 seconds on the anchor.
Baylor returns to action in two weeks as the Bears return to College Station for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 13-14.
