COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Trey Harts clocked a collegiate-leading time in the 200 meters and Baylor qualified 21 to Saturday's finals on the first day of action at the 2009 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Baylor qualified 11 women and 10 men to Saturday's event finals. The women finished the first day of competition in seventh place overall with 17 points, while the men's team did not score on the first day.
Harts clocked a personal best time of 20.66 in the men's 200 meters, an NCAA automatic qualifying time. The time also ranks as the second-fastest time in the world, behind American Greg Nixon's 20.65 set earlier this month.
The women's distance medley relay took second place overall in the event finals. The Lady Bears handed off just behind Texas Tech heading into the anchor leg. Erin Bedell ran stride-for-stride with NCAA champion Sally Kipyego for the first seven laps, but could not match Kipyego's final kick on the last lap.
DeAna Carson took third overall in the long jump with a best mark of 6.25m (20-06 ¼), just one inch off the conference-winning mark. It marks Carson's first-ever All-Big 12 honor.
Jodi Hulett placed sixth in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 16:52.54, as she made a strong push over the final two laps to hold off the competition. Hulett earns her first-career All-Big 12 citation.
Baylor qualified two of the top three times in the 60 meter dash, as Harts and Whitney Prevost each advanced to the event finals. Prevost also finished second overall to Harts in the men's 200 meters.
Four Baylor runners advanced to the finals of the men's 400 meters, including LeJerald Betters who clocked 46.80 in his first open 400 meter race of the season to finish third overall. Marcus Boyd finished second overall, while Quentin Iglehart-Summers and J.T. Scheuerman took fourth and seventh, respectively.
Tiffany Townsend qualified for the event finals in the 60 meters and 200 meters. Her time of 7.33 in the 60 meters was the third-fastest of the preliminaries. She also clocked a time of 23.11 in the 200 meters, setting a new school record with the second-fastest time in the nation this year.
Chris Gowell clocked the fastest time in qualifying in the men's 800 meters at 1:50.45, while Benvegnu's time of 2:11.18 was fast enough to qualify in the women's 800 meters.
Katrina Taylor and Egle Uljas each qualified for the finals in the 600 yards, while Diamond Richardson clocked the third-fastest time of the preliminaries in the 400 meters at 53.82. The time is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Baylor returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. for Day Two at the 2009 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.
