STORY LINES
• Baylor will put its 11-game win streak on the line when it hosts UT-Pan American on Wed., Dec. 30, at 7 p.m.
• Three Lady Bears are averaging double-digit scoring. Freshman post Brittney Griner leads the team with 19.3 points a game while senior Morghan Medlock tallies 12.6 and junior guard Melissa Jones is averaging 12.2.
• BU freshman post Brittney Griner became just the seventh female to dunk in a regular-season NCAA contest when she threw one down against Jacksonville State on Nov. 24. She is also a defensive threat as a shot blocker and alterer with her 88" wing span.
• In 10 seasons under head coach Kim Mulkey, Baylor is 248-67 (.787), which ranks her No. 4 nationally in winning percentage. In addition, the Lady Bear program ranks No. 6 among the NCAA Division I's winningest teams over that span.
• Melissa Jones, Brittney Griner and Morghan Medlock combine for 23.8 (52.8%) of BU's 45.1 rebounds a game.
• Baylor's five starters, Kelli Griffin, Shanay Washington, Melissa Jones, Morghan Medlock and Brittney Griner are shooting a combined 52.1 percent (258-495) from the floor.
• With her dramatic improvement since the beginning of the season, Brittney Griner has become a contender for National Player of the Year and Big 12 Player of the Year honors.
• Brittney Griner blocks more shots per game than 325 of the 332 NCAA Division I schools and only two teams beside Baylor (Michigan State and St. Mary's) have blocked more shots than Griner.
• Brittney Griner received back-to-back Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors for her performances the week of Dec. 7-20 and Dec. 14-21, marking the third time she's earned the honor this season.
• Griner recorded the program's first-ever triple-double with her 34 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocked shots against Oral Roberts.
• Just eight games into her rookie season, Griner cracked BU's single-season top 10 list with 47. She now has 77 and has moved up to No. 4 on the chart. In fact, Griner needs just 10 more blocks to crack Baylor's top 10 career blocks list.
• Kelli Griffin and Brittney Griner were named to the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic's All-Tournament team, Griner was named MVP.
BYG NATIONAL & BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE YEAR CONTENDER
With her dramatic improvement since the beginning of the season, freshman sensation Brittney Griner has become a National Player of the Year candidate as well as a contender for Big 12 Player of the Year honors.
BYG BLOCKS MORE THAN MOST TEAMS
In NCAA Division I statistics of games through Dec. 22, Brittney Griner blocks more shots per game (6.4) than 325 of the 332 NCAA Division I teams ranked.
In addition, only two NCAA Division I teams (excluding Baylor) have blocked more shots than Griner's 77. St. Mary's (Calif.) has blocked 104 on the season while Michigan State has rejected 91.
FRESHMEN PRODUCING
All five of the team's freshmen are averaging 3.1 or more points a game. Brittney Griner leads the rookies with 19.3 a contest, Shanay Washington averages 6.8 points, Jordan Madden manages 6.8 a game, Kimetria Hayden scores 4.3 an outing and Mariah Chandler follows with 3.1 a contest.
All five average 8.2 or more minutes an outing, and two, Griner and Washington, are in the starting lineup.
CAN WE BE OF ASSISTANCE
Baylor players are dishing it out this season. In its 12 games, Baylor has collected assists on 202 of the team's 362 field goals made which accounts for assists on 55.8 percent of its shots.
Point guard Kelli Griffin (64) and Melissa Jones (39) account for 51.0 percent of Baylor's assists.
