PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Three Baylor players made it through to the second round of the ITA Riviera All-American, but each bowed out in the second round of qualifying in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Jelena Stanivuk beat Illinois' Leigh Finnegan in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, but took a second-round defeat to Irene Rehberger of South Florida, 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-2. Teammate Csilla Borsanyi also won her first-round match over UNC's Katrina Tsang 7-5, 6-7(4), 7-6 (3) before losing to Old Dominion's Nadine Fahoum 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
After making it through pre-qualifying last weekend, Nina Secerbegovic had the same luck, winning her first-round match over BYU's McCall Jones 7-6, 3-6, 7-5, then dropping a two-setter to UCLA's Andrea Remynse 6-2, 6-4.
"There were flashes of great tennis (Tuesday), but we just couldn't sustain long enough," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "I do feel like we are making progress and it's exciting to see."
Taylor Ormond, the only other BU player competing in the qualifying draw of singles play, dropped her first-round match to Virginia's Jennifer Stevens 3-6, 4-6. Ormond bounced back in the consolation round with a win over Ole Miss' Karen Nijssen in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.
Ormond teamed up with Stanivuk in Baylor's only doubles tandem, but took a first-round defeat to Florida State's Lauren Mcfarlane and Federica Suess 8-5.
Baylor will be back in action with consolation play continuing on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at the ITA All-American.
