LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Csilla Borsanyi and Jelena Stanivuk both dropped quarterfinal matches on Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Memorial Tournament in Las Vegas.
Borsanyi, ranked No. 32 in the nation, fell to 17th-ranked Melanie Gloria of Fresno State 6-3, 6-3, while No. 65 Stanivuk dropped a match to defending NCAA singles champion and sixth-ranked Amanda McDowell 7-6 (5), 6-3.
"Jele and Csilla had very strong showings this weekend, however today they ran into two very talented and experienced players," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "Unfortunately we didn't help our cause by beating ourselves on the critical points. If the ladies can learn from it, these types of matches can really help with their development."
No. 19 Taylor Ormond won two matches on Saturday, defeating No. 83 Shinann Featherston of North Carolina 6-2, 6-3, before downing UCLA's Ashley Joelson 6-3, 6-1.
"TO is playing more fundamentally sound everyday and it is showing in her results," said Scrivano.
Lenka Broosova defeated Arizona State's Laila Abdala in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 in singles competition.
"We are please to see the way Lenks is playing," said Scrivano. "Her game is evolving and she has improved a lot since the fall."
The Lady Bears continued their strong play in doubles competition, as third-ranked Broosova and Borsanyi defeated No. 46 Christina Ngo and Sasha Krupina of Georgia Tech 8-3. Ormond and Stanivuk defeated UCLA's Joelson and Carling Seguso 9-8 (4).
"In doubles we did a good job of doing the ordinary things well and learning from our losses yesterday," said Scrivano. "We need to continue to stay on that track and move towards taking it up a notch tomorrow."
At the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Zuzana Chmelarova defeated Siobhan Cavan of Oregon 6-0, 6-1, while Kasia Siwosz downed UCLA's Jordan Dockendorf 6-4, 6-1. Karolina Filipiak dropped her singles match, 6-1, 6-4, to UCLA's Stephanie Wetmore, while Nina Secerbegovic fell to Northwestern's Lauren Lui 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles action, Siwosz and Secerbegovic defeated Kristen Flower of Ohio State and Dockendorf of UCLA, while Chmelarova and Filipiak lost to Stephanie MacFarlane and Ana Cecilia Olivos of Oregon 8-4.
