LUBBOCK, Texas - Baylor captured three event victories on the first day of competition at the Wes Kittley Invitational as the Bears opened the 2009 indoor track season.
Leigh Ann Ganzar opened the meet for Baylor with a win in the 1,000 meters. Her winning time of 2:55.17 was good enough to edge freshman Cate Westenhover at the finish line. The time ranks as the seventh-fastest in Baylor history, while Westenhover recorded the ninth-best time in school history.
The Lady Bears swept the top five positions in the event as Lauren Simpson, Kathryn Benvegnu and Kristen Hanselka took third through fifth for Baylor.
DeAna Carson won the women's long jump with a leap of 6.02m (19-09), a new indoor personal best. Carson jumped 19-07 ½ at the Lobo Invitational as a freshman.
Chris Gowell, a mid-term signee from Newport, South Wales, won the men's 1,000 meters with a time of 2:25.58, the third-fastest time in Baylor history.
