2008-09 Women's Tennis Schedule
WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team will play a minimum of 18 teams ranked in the 2008 final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings during the 2009 spring season, head coach Joey Scrivano announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The four-time defending Big 12 regular season champions are coming off a record-setting performance in 2008, also claiming their third-straight conference tournament title and advancing to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Baylor will also play host to a National Team Indoor Qualifying tournament on Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The four-team qualifier for the National Team Indoor Tournament in Madison, Wisc. will also include Princeton, Iowa and Virginia Tech, all ranked in the final ITA rankings.
"We have a tradition of playing one the toughest schedules in the nation," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "Our players want to challenge themselves and play against top-notch opponents. The ladies have been competing hard in practice and ready to start the fall season."
Baylor opens its 2008 fall season at the Riviera All-American in Pacific Palisades, Calif. on Sept. 27-Oct. 5. Already selected to the main draw of the tournament is Lenka Broosova, the preseason eighth-ranked player in the country.
Newcomer Csilla Borsanyi has been named an alternate to the main draw, and will compete in the qualifying rounds along with sophomore Taylor Ormond. Borsanyi and Broosova will compete in the qualifying rounds of the doubles tournament as well. In addition, Jelena Stanivuk and Karolina Filipiak will compete in the prequalifying singles draw.
The Lady Bears continue the fall season with the ITA Regional in Fort Worth, Texas and the ITA National Indoors tournament in Charlottesville, Va.
After the National Team Indoor Tournament, Baylor faces five-straight opponents ranked in the Top 20 of the final 2008 rankings. The Lady Bears host 12th-ranked Miami before traveling to No. 8 Georgia and No. 6 Georgia Tech at the end of February. After playing host to No. 19 Michigan on Mar. 6, the Bears travel to face third-ranked California on Mar. 10.
Baylor then plays five-straight home matches, including a match-up with defending champion UCLA, ranked No. 1 in the final 2008 rankings. That match is scheduled for Mar. 14 at 1:30 p.m.
The Lady Bears will face a Big 12 schedule that features six ranked opponents, including a home date against No. 15 Texas on April 11. Last season, Baylor clinched the regular season Big 12 title with a 7-0 win over the Longhorns in Austin.
The Big 12 Championships are scheduled from April 23-26in Norman, Okla. The NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds will be played at host sites, with the following rounds being held at College Station, Texas.
