WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's and women's cross country teams are set to open the 2008 season, hosting the Baylor Twilight Invitational on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Baylor Intramural Fields. The Lady Bears are coming off a 17th-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
The Lady Bears return 13 of 15 letterwinners from the 2007 squad that qualified for its fifth-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships. The Lady Bears' 17th-place finish was the highest of all Big 12 Conference schools, and marked the fourth-highest finish at the national meet in program history. The 1998 squad finished eighth overall for Baylor's highest finish, while the 1991 team finished 10th and the 2005 team finished 15th.
The men's squad returns 11 of 12 runners from last season, led by junior Ben Haby and sophomore Robbie Knorr. Last year, Haby scored in all seven of Baylor's meets, while Knorr placed in Baylor's top two finishers in all five races in which he competed.
The 2008 Baylor Twilight features a strong field, including three South Central Region foes in TCU, SMU and Lamar. Also expected to compete are Angelo State, Dallas Baptist, Northwood, Tarleton State and UT-Tyler.
Last year Baylor placed eight runners in the top 11 finishers as the Lady Bears scored 21 points to win the team competition. Nichole Jones notched her third-career individual title with a time of 13:37.9. The men's team placed fourth overall with 99 points as Jacob Jones and Robbie Knorr each earned Top 15 finishes.
