WACO, Texas -
Zuzana Zemenova won her singles match 6-0, 6-1 on Senior Day as the sixth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team defeated Oklahoma State 5-2. The Lady Bears improve to 24-2 overall, and remain a perfect 9-0 in Big 12 action.
Zemenova, the 2005 NCAA Singles Champion, won at number two doubles with Zuzana Chmelarova, and made quick work of her singles match on court one.
"You really don't want your team to get too emotional on a day like today," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "Our team was very professional and came out very focused."
Baylor swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead. On court three, Natalie Holmes and Jana Bielikova defeated Maryna Tkachenko and Jessica Collins 8-2. After dropping the first game, Baylor stormed back to win eight of the next nine games and notch the first win of doubles play.
No. 57 Jelena Stanivuk and Taylor Ormond downed Sasha Belova and Jo-Anne Karaitiana 8-2 on court one to secure the doubles point for the Lady Bears. Again, Baylor dropped the first game, but Stanivuk and Ormond rallied for seven straight games en route to the 8-2 win.
On court two Zemenova and Chmelarova finished the sweep for Baylor with an 8-5 win over Iryna Tkachenko and Yawna Allen. Zemenova, who owns the most doubles wins in school history, added to her school record total in her final doubles appearance at home.
Baylor got its second point on court four as Bielikova won after Belova retired due to injury. No. 81 Bielikova won the first set easily and was well ahead in set two, winning by a final score of 6-1, 4-1 (ret.).
Zemenova wasted no time in her match, winning the first set 6-0 over I. Tkachenko on court one. Zemenova then closed out her final home singles match with a 6-1 second-set victory.
"It was a very emotional day," said Zemenova. "I didn't get much sleep last night. But I was able to focus today and do what coach told me to. I think that I've been able to improve during our last few matches and am getting ready for the NCAA Tournament."
Chmelarova clinched the match for the Lady Bears at number five singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over M. Tkachenko. Chmelarova jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first set, and finished the match off breaking Tkachenko's serve.
"I thought that Jelena played very well today," said Scrivano. "She had a very strong showing and gave us the performance that we needed."
On court two, Ormond dropped the first set to Allen, but rallied to win the second set 7-5. In the supertiebreak third set, Allen jumped out to a quick lead and held on to win 10-4.
